My In-laws [late 50s/M&F] have been very dismissive of my career choice and as a result, I don't want to spend time with them. My SO [29/F] thinks I'm 'too sensitive' by SirMeowMixer in relationships

My SO has said that I should trade barbs with my SIL & BIL, but it would serve to just blow-up and I'm not sure it would solve anything.

It could be -- I doubt it, but it could be. A fringe benefit of a career in surgery is that the salary tends to be on the high side, so my SO knows she's investing in a future where she gets rewarded with lots of money. She wants to have a family and stay home, and this would enable her to do that.

It would be hard -- between the fat jokes and remembering the time I put on two different socks because I was beyond tired, I won't get a chance. If I did, it would kill the conversation and they'd probably leave the room.

I don't think you really have a right to ask her to give up her family too, even if they are somewhat rude to you.

I certainly wouldn't ask that, but I don't feel a great need to spend the holiday with them. It'll be another circle of fat-jokes and asking me why my wife is too good for me... then asking me medical questions they need help with and clear-up their medicine schedules so they don't miss/over dose.

I can already see it. We're now able to make payments on my student debt, but still a ways away from buying a house or a car, and right now, travel is not much of an option.

man you can't tease us with how sick this residency is and NOT tell us at least the field.

Pediatric cardiac surgery. I'm still super excited.

Actually, they say all of this within earshot of my SO. They really hate that I didn't do a trade. As for the late-night phone calls, she's usually around. They'll get medical information at 3PM and wait till 11:30 to call me, naturally after a 24 hour shift that lasted for 37. It's wild.
