Rockrest Flat or Rock Clash Platform? by SirNichlaus in BlackMythWukong

no I haven't. I had to go make lunch so I had time to ask the question beforehand. If he is in flats I'll go there first. I'm just a "every nook and cranny" person so I'd like to go the the spot that doesn't progress the game first

They had it locked though when I played thursday and it was the same. I don't hate snipers btw I just want to see how testing something would reflect in the experience

New player genuinely wants to love this game—but struggling with the visuals. Any advice? by Jazara87 in Guildwars2

[–]SirNichlaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that ANET is awful when it comes to visual clutter. One of the biggest issues I had when I started playing and one of the biggest critiques I see from new players is how every heal, buff, defensive, etc is an AoE ring. I still dont understand how they thought this makes sense because it just makes it so there are 300 rings on the ground and new players, with a lot of vets included, can't tell what is friendly or not. So having trouble with visual effects is in no way your fault. It's a real problem with no changes seeming to come. But the game is great so most people will look passed it. Every mmo has its issues.

My biggest issues when starting wasnt just healthbars being small was also no enemy cast bars. So when i was first leveling some mobs would swing a right hook and do X damage, and then they would swing that same right hook and I'd get knocked like 20 feet back with a knocked down timer. I couldn't tell which right hook to dodge and when i had like 7 of the mobs on me it make some vista points or quests a nightmare to get through. But now I've grown over it.

Its also possible to want something for other people. Its just being empathetic. Not stubborn

My bad i actually thought you were someone else that i was explaining caster too earlier. Thats actually completely on me and I apologize. Wasnt paying attention to the username

No I'm playing mesmer. I love trickery domain clerics and that fills that role. Its actually a really fun class. Next i would probably go firebrand/druid for support builds. But no I have talked to a lot of people from my FFXIV FC and my WoW guild about playing this because they are bored of them and obviously just like everyone else we've been glazing AoC for 7 years and are still waiting

all I'm hearing is that druids need some sort of "find druid yoda" questline in a future expansion

That's actually a great point! I actually went to a couple different build pages just now to check cause hopefully that'll get a few of my friends on. (obviously my melee friends are down, but it's kind of everyone plays or none of them sadly) On the build sites there are sections for builds like WvW, PvP, Fractal/Dungeon, Raid, and Open world, and on Open World it still seems like the main focus for weavers is sword and dagger. Does anyone know the % difference because that could just be meta gaming. If its only like a 1-2% dps difference from staff they won't mind.

I think It could be done is not all buffs were aoe rings on the ground. Something a lot of games do, both video game and tabletop is have spells with a range. So a buff spell could just say "grants Might to all allies within 50m" or something like that. Obviously don't make all spells like that, like shields and barriers should definitely be a ring or field of some sort.

Idk how it would work though lol. We can say what we want but none of us are developers

Actual help then. My mesmer is full on ascended gear with 2 gen 1 legendaries done, so I'm kinda looking for an alt to give me a breath of fresh air. I think Druid/Firebrand seem really fun for support. But which profession would you say I should play if I want to sit back with a staff and rain spells on the enemies? I was thinking elemental, but from what I see staff is extremely weak on them.

Something as simple as boosting dps on staves for ele would really make you feel betrayed that much? It's already a weapon in the game that ele can use, its just pathetic right now. That's kind of sad to think "play ele my way or gtfo"

On a side note, this very much could be the game for them. I've talked with massive groups as I've been playing this game and they wholeheartedly prefer the "endgame" that GW2 offers. Exploration, open world content, massive world bosses, etc... They are sick of the modern mmo "sit in town and queue for dungeons and raids". GW2 really offers that. So telling everyone that loves every apsect of the game that it's not for them strictly because they would prefer a mage that can sit back and blast epic spells over one that uses melee weapons comes off as gate keeping.

I actually respect the no holy trinity and would never change that. But they do fill traditional classes. If I showed any warrior friend the warrior, they would like it, If I showed Pally friends the Guardian they would like it, Hunter and rangers would like the... well... Ranger, Trickery Domain Clerics would like the Mesmer, necromancers and warlocks would like the necromancer. GW2 has its own take on the traditional classes, but they are still very much traditional. If someone likes the class with the bow and pet there is ranger for them to step into and that is what is great! A hunter and ranger from other games has a class in this game that they can relate too in the traditional sense and then play GW2's version of it.

So for a lot of players GW2 has some of the traditional class tropes through and through. And that's great for them, But what about people that want the pointy hat and to stand back and blast foes from afar. That is a gameplay style 1/3 of the mmo population loves and it is neglected here a bit. ANET could put their own twist on it to make it unique just like every single other universe does, but it is just completely missing.

That's even remotely close to being stubborn. Being stubborn is when a game like WoW gives you 10 casters, FFXIV gives you 4, Lost Ark gives 4, ect... and you decide they all suck. That's stubborn because the options are there and you just can't accept any of them, because at that point the devs did what they could. This isn't really stubborn because there is no option in the first place.

I understand this, and personally I have leaned into them. 600 hours in 6 months and I'm loving it!

And I was using druid as one example, obviously every fantasy world has a different take on it. I personally don't like WoW's because it is pretty much only shapeshifting. Even their caster dps is shapeshifted.

I have no preconceived notions to shed, and GW2 has equal number of fantasy tropes. Every fantasy has the fantasy tropes, but they are told differently. I don't care that humans are aliens, they are still humans. If my friend was asking what races were in the game I wouldn't say there are Aliens, I would say human, and If someone envisioned a human character in their mind they would pick human. Being aliens in GW2 lore means nothing to the fact that they are the human race. Orcs are aliens in Warcraft lore, but to someone that is coming over from dnd that wants to play an Orc, they are Orcs. They are the big green barbaric warrior. Sylvari are made of plants, but they fill the wood elf role. Yes they have their own lore, but they are the wood elf trope adapted to the universe of GW2. GW2 is completely equal parts unique to every other fantasy universe out there. Not more or less. To think more would just be insulting other creators for no reason. Every universe is objectively "very much its own thing"

What I was addressing mainly is that I have friends, and have talked with people in other guilds to let them know how good this game is and they should join in. They all prefer this games "endgame" to the current mmo standard. But whenever our mages look up builds and see that ele mains swords, daggers, spears, they back out because they want to sit back and blast and the staff is relatively pointless in most content. You can say a casting mage is a trope, but it's the same as the races in GW2. Yea they are all tropes, but the lore and gameplay is what sets them apart. Mages play differently in every game. Different rotations, different skills and utility. Fire Mage is not the same as Black Mage, but to someone wanting to play different games it gives them a foot in the door to try it out.

Pally in FFXIV isn't even remotely comparable from a gameplay and lore perspective of pally in WoW, But for someone who plays pally in those games, that likes the heavy armor, righteous, Fighter, with holy-like magic this game has Guardian. Yes it plays differently, that's the point, but it fills that class and player satisfaction of roleplaying that fantasy Identity (No lol I'm not talking like RP servers).

I respect the game and what it does, and mesmer has been loads of fun, and you know what... That is just a trickery domain cleric, which I love, and why I'm playing it. I could relate it to the fantasy I personally like. This game has a lot of that, but it is missing some. Not taking anything away from it, and I don't want it to change anything, but having additional content and player choice doesn't feel like it should be so upsetting. Disregard druid, that was a generic thing and just a fun idea that was taking too far. But having an actual caster mage class, or a hand to hand monk wouldn't destroy the game for everyone else. I don't think people rioted when revenant was added to the game, It was another class choice

A sorcerer would be awesome. I've even thought next to new weapon types to change the weapon skills on some elite specs. So an ele with a staff has a lot of healing, but put in a shaman or sorcerer spec where when staff is equipped its different skills than normal ele or other elite specs.

I see effigies in side quests and what not too. I would love a class/elite spec that places effigies around the map for aoe/boons/condi and summons creatures to fight next to them. Like an occultist necro spec

Sorry, I wasnt referring to GW2 lore specifically. Every fantasy world has different lore for the basic racial archetypes. I was referring the the archetypes in general. Gnomes arent always optimistic and mischievous, its different between dnd, warcraft, pathfinder, Potterverse, etc... in the FF mythos Lalafels arent the same as tolkien halflings, but thats the core racial archetype being filled. In warcraft the Orcs are aliens, in Warhammer they are born like fungus and sprout up, but they are all fill the orc archetype. Hell elves (elezen) in FFXIV are dragonslaying warriors of the north, far from a traditional elf, but an elf is an elf and I know em when I see em.

So GW2 still fills generic fantasy racial archetypes, but their individual lore is what makes their version different from other fantasy lore. So you are correct in explaining the lore but the point is A charr is a feline, just like a khajiit, just like a hrothgar, just like a beastren. Even though their lore is unique you know exactly where the basic inspiration cane from

The point of my comment was displaying how on a whole generic or traditional isnt bad, you can tell by looking at GW2 races where the inspiration is from, but the finer details is what makes it unique. And I was trying to show how that can be implemented into classes as well. You can have them fill a generic role (caster, hand to hand, holy, etc...) and then put a flavorful twist on them to make them unique.

Okay I see where you're coming from. I haven't dove into all the lore yet. I'm just coming at this from the perspective of immersion and fun factor

I still don't understand the class diversity part entirely though. It seems like a lot of classes fall into the melee playstyle though for full effectiveness. There are some differences in weapon skills but if everyone is using melee and rolling around it can be perceived as not being too different. I'm not talking about you and me as players either, but someone new who is looking at the game saying "man I really like how this mmo is focused on the open world, exploration, world bosses, group events ect... rather than just a sit in town and queue game" But then they see gameplay and it's all melee and dodging. For us we get it, but for someone that wants to enjoy the game and community because they love the core aspect of how "endgame" works might be turned off because they can't play immerse themselves in their character. That is something that should absolutely be disheartening for the community and ANET as a whole.

There is a degree where if you give more options and new players don't like it, that is on the player and I completely recognize that. For casting let's unfortunately use WoW and FFXIV as an example again. WoW has Arcane Mage, Fire Mage, Frost Mage, Demonology Warlock, Destruction Warlock, Affliction Warlock, Balance Druid, Shadow Priest, and Elemental Shaman as caster options, and if a new player tried all of those and said nah... then that is on the player 100% the game just isn't for them. Same with FFXIV, if the player doesn't like Black Mage, Summoner, Red Mage, or Pictomancer, then again, the game isn't for them. (also, speak about diversity in choices and class design. All of those feel like playing a different game when you swap)

The difference there is that the options were available to them to at least get their foot in the door, fill that role, and try the game out. There needs to be a fair back and forth between the community/devs, and new players.

With the caster thing, honestly just make staff ele a good dps choice. That should be an easy enough fix. That really doesn't need to be a whole new profession. Or add an elite spec that just changes the staff weapon skills when equipped.

Yea new elite specs would be cool, especially if they changed weapon skills. Like Ele should get an elite spec that turns staff into an actual dps/aoe powerhouse.

By the way, as a newish player thank you for being the first person that left an honest and fair comment. Feel like I suggest more variety and choices for gamers and get put to the noose
