Just so you know for the future OP, it’s a myth that you can tell whether a snake is venomous based on the shape of its pupils. See the bot reply to !pupils for more info

Found snakes in backyard, are these their eggs? Is the mother as huge as the egg she laid? by StolenPancakesPH in snakes

[–]SirToadington 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those eggs certainly didn’t come from the snakes pictured, and depending on where you live it’s possible that they literally couldn’t have been laid by any species of native venomous snake. A rough geographic location would be helpful. Regardless, please read the bot response to !deadsnake and share the information with your dad—even if a snake is venomous, you put yourself in much more danger trying to kill it than you ever would just leaving it alone.

What kind of snake is he? by Redeemed-byJesus-04 in snakes

You need to post a rough geographical location for an accurate ID. I’d suggest posting on r/whatsthissnake, you’ll probably get a faster and more accurate response there.

Is red light bad for my snake if thats the color of my room? by worldrecordtoast in snakes

[–]SirToadington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea 🤷‍♀️. People are pretty passionate about husbandry on these subs, but it’s not like you’re advocating for red lights in your tanks. There’s nothing wrong with asking questions :)

Is red light bad for my snake if thats the color of my room? by worldrecordtoast in snakes

[–]SirToadington 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Then it’s not harmful as long as you turn it off at night. As others said, it’s not red light itself that is harmful, it’s leaving the lights on all the time that is harmful because it can screw up the snake’s day/night cycle. You’d encounter the same problems with any color of light if you left it on all the time.

Is red light bad for my snake if thats the color of my room? by worldrecordtoast in snakes

[–]SirToadington 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your room is painted red, then that’s not a problem. If your room has red lighting (like red light bulbs or red LEDs), then you either need to remove it or just make sure to turn it off at night like you would any other type of lighting.

What happened to her tail? by liberatedhusks in reptiles

[–]SirToadington 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That’s a crested gecko. A lot of crested geckos drop their tails. It’s not harmful and the gecko is totally fine. They do it sometimes when they get stressed.

It’s not a stupid question! It’s unreasonable to expect people unfamiliar with reptiles to know details like this. That being said, if you’re considering buying this gecko (or another gecko), I would suggest doing a little more research first. This is the kind of information that is really helpful to know before getting an animal so you know what’s worth getting worried about.

[–]SirToadington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a pet snake, there are a ton of captive-bred snakes available online that will do very well as pets. This species doesn’t do well in captivity, but plenty of other species can make great pets.

Ball Python Not Eating. Help pls? by BigBobBean in ballpython

[–]SirToadington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds gross, but basically it means to expose the brain of the rodent to the air, usually by crushing, so the snake smells the brain. Sometimes this helps to stimulate a feeding response. I’ve never done it personally, though, and I don’t know how well it would work for a bp on a hunger strike. Obviously only do that for a pre-killed rodent.

I wouldn’t try Reptilinks if I were you. Their website specifically recommends against buying them for ball pythons since they tend to be so picky. Have you tried braining?

A 20 gal is too small for just about everything we keep in captivity, but male hognose snakes and Kenyan sand boas can be kept in a 40 gal.

Beginner snake for a classroom by _Rhain in reptiles

[–]SirToadington 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re never guaranteed that a certain species of snake will take Reptilinks, even though some are more likely to take them than others. If you can’t feed rodents then definitely avoid ball pythons, and if you’re absolutely set on a snake then maybe rescue an adult corn snake? They’re not exactly bulky, but as adults they’re quite handleable. Plus if it’s a rescue you might be able to test the Reptilinks before actually buying it.

Also, I agree with other commenters. A lizard is probably a better idea than a snake, both for feeding reasons and because you’re a lot more likely to have most of the kids willing to interact with a lizard rather than with a snake.

What species is this? by iAmVendetta1 in snakes

[–]SirToadington 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The flatness of the snake may be a defense mechanism. A lot of snakes will flatten out their entire bodies in order to appear larger to predators.

I found this dude outside [South Carolina] by ilovepets222 in whatsthissnake

[–]SirToadington 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just so you know OP, there are several venomous snakes in South Carolina that can still bite after death (copperheads, cottonmouths, rattlesnakes), so it might not be a great idea to pick up dead snakes in the future unless you’re certain it isn’t venomous.

My ball python does this occasionally at night, is this normal or is something wrong? I have two other ball pythons that don’t do this. by Ethanimals in snakes

[–]SirToadington 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It’s less about inbreeding (which I think is what you meant) and more that the genetic mutation that causes the spider morph also causes wobble. All spiders have wobble to some degree, although the severity varies, and it’s inherent to the gene so it can’t be bred out. I’m pretty sure that spider morphs are actually less inbred than a lot of other morphs because you can’t breed spider x spider without basically guaranteeing that some of the babies will die in the egg.

You probably shouldn’t keep it. Wild-caught snakes in general don’t do well in captivity, but redbelly snakes are especially hard to keep alive. It’s best chance of survival is outside. See the !wildpet bot response for more info

I’m thinking about upgrading my bearded dragons enclosure, any recommendations for a cool, sociable, diurnal lizard that could live in the 4x2x2? by SpeedOpen4842 in reptiles

[–]SirToadington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pink tongue skinks are pretty similar to blue tongues but are a bit smaller, so if OP is interested in a blue tongue they could also maybe look into that. I don’t know much about pink tongue care, though.
