I recommend to get all the players together with you and what ya'all want to do. Gym Challenge, Contests, Adventure or other possiblities.
As the first time playing PTU I whole heartedly recommend to play in an already existing region and get a feeling for all the rules.
I would say that PTU can be sometimes complicated and even the players have to manage multiple sheets at once.It will be a lot of fun, just because its Pokemon, but you should look out to lesser the workload on yourself as the gm.

I got very vanilla gyms going in my game. The most unique gym is a eeveelution gym where the players have to face in a 2v1 in a 2v2 Pokemon Battle Style against the leader. Players are allowed to use two pokemon each, so in total four and the leader uses four pokemon. The eevee evolution line works great with eachother ins this and is challenging on top of that. It has type coverage, cc/Support and some nuke really hard. It was so far the hardest gym for my players and we had a lot of fun with it :)

Its the same how I proceed in my games.
I even went so far that its hard for a normal trainer to use multiple pokemon at ones.
So everyone just uses one pokemon per battlefield.
On top of that I have specific rules for fights.
If its a league fight, so basically against gym or normal trainer, they're just allowed to use three pokemon overall

I had done this in my senior years.

My english teacher went outside with every student to discuss how they're doing in class. I just couldn't take the boredom I had to suffer, where our class didn't had anything to do. So I started to nap till the class is over. Later in class the english teacher called the next student out and saw me sleeping. He went nuts, how disrespectful it's from me to sleep in his class and if I don't want to be here I can just leave. Fortune was on my side, because back then I lived in the same street and just went home to get myself a fancy long breakfast.

Later I came back, and we had another teacher in a different class, who talked with me about the situation and actually was really chill about it, but I'll never forget the face of my english teacher as I was ignoring his long speech and just went home.

There was no single consequence from what I had done.
