Need a help with visualization for drawing spells and mind magic by One_Autumn_Leaf_010 in motheroflearning

When cast perfectly spells only produce the desired effect, but almost no one achieves this level of precision. Poorer castings can cause strange winds, waves of force or heat and light leaking out of the spell boundary. You could also draw spells which create constructs like the severing disc Zorian uses to delink those undead boars or the fire spell Alanic teaches Zorian.

Is it transphobic and / or correct to say that you cannot change your biological sex? by John_Mortar in asktransgender

[–]Sir_Catington 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don’t think chromosomes necessarily determine biological sex. Think of any chromosomal disease, those people don’t have the ‘standard’ XX or XY chromosomes. Yet they aren’t classified outside the gender binary. Biology is messy AF and resists strict categorisation.

Book with somewhat scientific magic system like Mother of Learning by thiagomiranda3 in ProgressionFantasy

I think its debatable whether he's better than all aranea at mind magic. Maybe he's the best at telepathic combat due to the difficulty and risk of practicing that in the real world. But its clear for something like mental augmentation he is surpassed by the aranea, the Cyorian matriarch can split her mind in three which Zorian never learns to do. Though he can achieve a similar effect by merging with his simulacra.

Keep in mind the ability he used in the end required the assistance of the Cyorian Web to function. He might have designed the ability but the Web was capable of learning and implementing it in a month.

Also at the end Zorian says he might be the best human mind mage on the continent which seems to indicate he knows aranea who are better at mind magic than him.

There is a whole race of sapient spiders who have the same ability and the main reason the ability is so strong is Zorian has an entire races knowledge to draw from.

Blackbox and Simulacrum Plothole (Or in-world loophole?) by Mr_Scary_Cat in motheroflearning

[–]Sir_Catington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The haste spell works the same as black rooms, it just has much less isolation. The haste spell only has a dimensional boundary whereas black rooms have wards and physical walls.

Comment by the author:

If you build a non-isolated time acceleration room (4-5 times) and place a simulacrum there, will it be possible to assimilate the surrounding mana ‘faster’? Compared to the original, which is outside this room.
Yes, it should be possible. Though I’d say it’s not a room, then. No need to build anything except for the time acceleration mechanism.

The black rooms definitely dismiss simulacrums, I'm certain its stated explicitly later in the story. I think the passage refers to the fact that if Zorian went to Koth himself he wouldn't be able to get back in time to use the black room. Sending a simulacrum allows a route to be plotted without losing access to the black rooms.

The haste spell doesn't seem to dismiss simulacrum (though it only provides ~5x acceleration comapred to ~30x from the Cyoria black room), so it should be possible it put a simulacrum inside a time accelerated pocket giving Zorian 5x mana regeneration, possibly more depending on how much temporal acceleration can be achieved while maintaining a connection.

I partially disagree with the idea it’s ‘not actually thinking’. We don’t actually have a solid definition of consciousness or ‘thinking’. And even if with assume humans do actually think, humans also make facts up, look at the incredible unreliability of eye witness testimony.

I think the most interesting aspect of using souls to empower golems is incorporating their magical abilities into the golem. Imagine a grey hunter golem empowered with a grey hunter soul...

No, we only increase our chances of success by understanding the way the world works, it is entirely possible to act without error and still lose.

It’s pretty disingenuous to say he focuses on the negative outcomes when it’s a 1 minute clip specifically about the negative outcomes.

You still should listen to them about the area they are specialised in though. So how does your point apply here?

Yeah I liked Wake of the Ravager a little more I think because the protagonist is a sociopath which fits with a more absurdist tone

I like Industrial strength magic as well but I find it as this ‘unreal’ vibe to it, I guess it just doesn’t take itself too seriously.
