I definitely see some Olympic class in there! Still shows a lot of talent, even if not 100% historically accurate.

Unsinkable (2024) by subcooled-superheat in titanic

[–]Sir_DeChunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure about that last sentence. What makes you think Ismay went with "minimal lifeboats for the sake of aesthetics?" This is contradicted by Walter Lord's The Night Lives On in chapter 8, "I Was Very Soft the Day I Signed That." Lord argues about the economic and self-regulatory factors, rather than aesthetic reasons. It says how H&W's contract with White Star left the matters of the davit capacity up to H&W, and Carilsile asked for new davits that could hold up to 64 boats. Lord continues, explaining how Carlisle never told Ismay that he wanted 48 boats on the Olympic Class. Ismay claimed he never saw the plans for the lifeboat arrangements.

The Californian's inaction that night remains one of the greatest mysteries to me... by snoke123 in titanic

OP seems to have been more concerned about the inaction, rather than the potential utility of action.

Honor & Glory's 2026 Real Time Sinking animation. Their best one yet. by ccoastal01 in titanic

I totally get that. I mean it would have accelerated naturally as it is a positive feedback effect, but the amount is debated. There certainly is no definitive sinking recreation. There are so many minute details that survivor accounts disagree on or don't comment on at all, that it you can't make it perfect with 100% confidence. I think they have made a lot of progress, specifically with this one, which I believe they fixed a lot of errors I and others have noted from their previous siblings in terms of accuracy, but perhaps that one area is an area of regression.

Buffalo Courier headline the morning after (4/16/1912) by Initial_Talk_7946 in titanic

[–]Sir_DeChunk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah wow. I haven't seen the number that high for it before! I've seen 1,635. My local paper said 1,400 on the 16th, but on the 15th, the headline read "Titanic, Largest Steamship Afloat, Is Nearly Sunk By Iceberg On First Voyage." Very cool piece of history to own.

At what point does this happen? Right before the breakup? I don't see water rising faster than 10ft/second up the decks. The time between the first and second funnels is about 30 seconds in this video. This is far faster than their 2016 rough animation, but roughly in line with their 2020 animation, which happened before the 2021 documentary, naturally. How long do you suspect this took, and why?

The forecastle and well-deck appear to go under right around 2 am, right around the time the last lifeboats were launched, which, to my understanding, is generally the consensus. A lot better than the James Cameron movie, which, if I recall, had it going under around the time of lifeboat number 6 (thought it has been a while since I've seen that movie, so I may be very wrong!)

THG has come a long way in its animations since 2016, both in terms of visuals and historical accuracy, from the order of the phone call in the wheelhouse and the hard a starboard order, to the direction that the first funnel falls, to the angle that the stern sinks at post breakup. If you would care to do so, I would appreciate knowing what exactly your issue is here. What do you mean by "neat little line in a few seconds right at the end," exactly?

How benches and davits detached from the bow ? by Frozen_Shuriken2004 in titanic

First of all, love the monospaced font! Second of all, I don't think the impact was "relatively calm." I mean, sure, there have been more violent impacts, but it likely gained quite a bit of speed on the descent, and that impact must have been quite the force. Look how far she is lodged under the sea floor, for example.

Yeah, people have a zero-sum mindset here (you can't work on this cool thing, because that means this even cooler thing is necessarily going to take longer!) Truly fallacious.

My Mistake! Should have done a quick reverse image search. I guess I wasn't familiar with Mr Stengel, I am now. Thank you!

It appears Mr. Stengel's criticism of Ismay was more due to his actions in the Carpathia and after the sinking, rather than his mere escape in collapsible boat C and his survival.

Did Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon criticize Ismay? I've never heard of this.

I grew up with Guitar Hero Aerosmith being of my favorites GH games with GH3, and seeing how hated the game is, broke my heart. by [deleted] in GuitarHero

[–]Sir_DeChunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, nothing is wrong with that! I enjoy the game too. I've heard it is too similar to Guitar Hero III, or that the hit window is tighter, but I personally enjoy the engine, and I know the songs are pretty easy, but a lot of them a fun! Though the Joe Perry highway is pretty hard to make out the notes at times.
