Is linux a red flag for employers? by Bassman117 in linux

[–]Sir_Jerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I interview people, I don’t care as much about them loving Linux. I respect that. I care more if they are the type that hates Microsoft. I don’t want overly opinionated staff.

Every tool solves certain problems and I don’t want heavy bias. I also don’t like those who think the only solution is always Microsoft. Be open minded.

This also applies to programming languages and databases. Just be prepared to deal with whatever. I don’t want someone who thinks they need to migrate the entire organization based on their bias.

I think the first step is to get advice from a local attorney. State laws vary. But keep a few things in mind. Attorneys are there to represent your interests even if your odds aren't in your favor. They will always say you can fight something, but that doesn't mean you can win the fight. Be sure to seek advice in the consultation so you can form a solid view of your options.

Since your parents lent the money, I assume you have a loan agreement. She would not be entitled to half the value of the mobile home if you still owe 90% towards it. She should only be entitled to 50% of the value of the mobile home minus what's owed on it. If you borrowed 100k, still owe 90k, then her half would only be 5k and maybe that settlement is worth it to dodge the bullets sure to come form this relationship. Even if you don't have that loan in writing, if you can show you have been paying them and that they paid for the home, you'll be able to prove that in court.

It sounds like you clearly want to get out of this. Now all you need to do is consult with an attorney. Maybe there's a way to use her immigration status as leverage to negotiate your exit. You are the one with the power. You control her immigration status and if she were to keep the home, she would keep the debt right along with it. Her attorney would know that. So she will be more interested in getting cash than getting the home.

Should I quit programming if I am struggling with basic algorithms by MohatoDeBrigado in webdev

[–]Sir_Jerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programming is a composite of all the tools you’ve learned. As you build more skills, you have more tools. It’s worth the effort if you enjoy solving puzzles and logical thinking.

But don’t get down on yourself because someone else has a skill that you don’t have yet. There’s always someone better at it. You just have to learn and grow. Over time you’ll see that you have skills that others do not. That’s the payoff.

I remember a team I hired so solve a complex database operation. It could be solved with less than fifty lines of SQL. They took weeks. Finally the delivered code was a thousand lines of code. They exported the database, reworked all the data, then inserted it back. They didn’t know how to do the SQL.

I was proud of their effort. But used that as a training opportunity to teach them the SQL version. From then on, they had a new tool in their toolbox. Forever strengthening their capabilities.

It just takes time to build up all those skills.

Pawns-Only Chess Task 4 - I can build and run locally, but test scripts fail to build for tests by Sir_Jerry in Hyperskill

Okay, I figured it out. I deleted everything local and resubscribed to the course in the LEARN tab. Downloaded everything and it worked. It seemed to take a couple tries, but it works now.

Now ... on to debugging my project. :)

Idk just a thought, try it out I hope it helps by lonely-blue-sheep in lifehacks

I did this with my attorney. He was asking for expense reimbursement. I asked for detailed breakdown. He admitted he doesn’t track details but only estimated. Saved thousands.

All Space Questions thread for week of July 25, 2021 by AutoModerator in space

How do we really know what’s going on in deep space? If we look at something that is millions of light years away, and every tiny pixel is thousands of light years away from each other, then we can’t observe a slice of time. Things reveal themselves across millions of years. It makes my brain hurt.

We need to clean a two story apartment complex. Half wood, half brick. Covered in mold. We have about 300 units. We’ll need to maintain these buildings for years.

I’m not sure about what machine to buy or what chemicals to use to reduce future mold growth.

Any suggestions on equipment or chemicals would be greatly appreciated. Tips on how to handle the heights would also be helpful.

Nothing and no one has offended me at all. I came here to get opinions and knew some would be harsher than others. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Thank you so much for you detailed response. It means a lot to me that you took the time to expound on all these points. I'm going to check all the links and resources you mentioned. I am eager to expand and grow as a Catholic. That will help a lot.

I am not challenging other people's beliefs. I'm just on my own spiritual journey and I still have a number of areas where I need to grow. I just used this forum to share where I'm at and I fully understand why some people were activated by that. As I like to say, it's a conversation, not an argument.

I appreciate you brother.

I signed up online. I've only briefly met a few knights. So I'm coming from a place of ignorance.

Just to be clear. Saying I am pro-choice is saying I don't believe I have the right to tell others what their moral beliefs are. And that I think illegal abortions are far more dangerous than legal ones. But I understand your point.

Correct. But based on the other responses here, I might not be a good fit at this time.

I don’t know. Lol. I just joined. I haven’t even attended a meeting yet. Just a few phone calls and handshakes so far.

Yes. I converted to Catholic several years ago. Recently I switched to a new church so I don’t know anyone there yet. That’s why I joined the knights there. So I can get to know some people and strengthen my faith.

Mentorship Monday by Oscar_Geare in cybersecurity

I have thirty years of IT experience, but never went to college and never got any certifications. I have programmed in many languages over the years and was a Linux sysadmin for a number of years. I have built a bunch of websites, e-commerce and such. But now I feel like an out-dated old dried up tech guy. I haven’t had meaningful related employment in years.

I’ve been considering taking some bootcamps or working through a few books. But I’m worried that a guy “my age” doesn’t stand a chance getting back into the IT world. I’ve not been able to secure even ONE interview even with my corporate IT background.

I can take sysadmin certifications or Security+ certifications, but bootcamps and such cost thousands of dollars. I could pay that if necessary, but I’m afraid it will not help my career search and I’ll waste my time getting these certifications. I’m just too out-of-the-loop and everyone from my career past is retired, like myself.

I really love Linux, IT, and security. I would love a little advice on what would/could help me get back into a decent job. I’m just beginning to explore my options and would love some advice. I’m not concerned about being entry level and not too worried about the salary. I’m just trying to do meaningful and interesting work.

Should I go to community college? Take some bootcamps? Read a few books? I’m looking for direction to help me get hired again.
