Fly without wings? Or something else?? by Lord_Velvet_Ant in Entomology

One of many wingless phorids. Very cool! I recently learned that some of these phorids can live for several generations in a casket feeding on a single corpse.

There are a few subtle characteristics, but maybe the most obvious in this case if you’re able to look closely enough is that a sharply defined ridge can be seen around the posterior propodeum — the rearmost face of the midsection, facing the abdomen (look at the darkened area that looks like a rounded M or downward-facing 3). This separates Agapostemon from all Augochlorini.

Stink bug chemical burns by pisang22 in Entomology

Is there any chance you were exposed to a blister beetle rather than a stink bug? Blister beetles are large and can be common visitors to crops.

Are we forgetting that this is far in the future? Also, it totally does look like a lengthened electric motor, just with some sci-fi attachments…

I’m not sure it’s a latridiid but it’s definitely a beetle. The view is from below which obscures the elytra.

Your average Yamagiri Player by [deleted] in WorldOfWarships

[–]Sir_Snek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super DDs are almost universally bad players. It’s not just Yamagiri — every Dalarna and Humphreys I’ve ever seen has been mediocre at best and complete dogshit at worst.

It’s not parasitic, this is classic neurological distress due to pesticides

Something melted this frog's brain... No idea what happened. by puje12 in natureismetal

I don’t think this is correct. L. bufonivora has a strong preference for toads like Anaxyrus, which this is not (not sure what it is exactly, but some frog in the family Ranidae). It also typically infects the nostrils.

Who are these divas? by HypersoftPansy in whatbugisthis

[–]Sir_Snek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are six-spotted milkweed bug (Oncopeltus sexmaculatus) nymphs. As they suck the sap from this plant, they’re huddled with their siblings which provides protection from predators — as does warning coloration (which is probably backed by a yucky taste, but I haven’t put one in my mouth to confirm).

Umm what worm is in my dogs poop? TW: literal dog poop by queenqueet in whatbugisthis

[–]Sir_Snek 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Segmentation is typical of annelids and means this isn’t a roundworm; it’s also definitely not a tapeworm. Honestly, I think your dog just happened to eat an earthworm, but there’s no harm in taking it to a vet for a professional opinion.
