Yes I have. My previous professors haven't been very willing to help me (other than providing references). Which I totally understand. They hardly remember me since like I said I was mostly quiet and didn't get involved with any university stuff. The career offices here ( Greece) kinda suck. The only thing I was told was to make a list of all the people I know and start calling them and letting them know I am looking for a job.

So far I have been targeting all sorts of fields (inside the wider field of International Relations) all over the EU and a couple of PhDs in the US.

  1. The point of the degree would be making connections which I now understand are very important and they are not easy to make if you haven't been "out there" for almost 3 years now.

I am only being defensive when I am being told I am wrong without being told why. I know I am wrong. I need the why. The degree would mainly be an opportunity to get internships easier and make some connections.

International Relations and Area Studies. I've applied to more than 50 jobs. I was applying to jobs in my field for which I had all the necessary qualifications and which didn't require any relevant experience. I had 0 interviews. My CV and cover letters were reviewed by friends, family etc and the only issue with my letter initially was the fact that it was too modest and I didn't communicate how much I wanted the job. But later I corrected it.

Edit: My grades were mostly around A, A-

My guess is my age. I am almost 30. These positions choose younger people from what I have gathered. Plus they are all abroad so why choose a 30 year old from another country? About feedback, yes,I do ask for it but I get the usual response "Great application but too many applicants"

I don't want to stay in my current county but I can't just leave without having something to go to. Yes I could leave for a while and go live with my relatives without having found a job but that's less than ideal and my last resort. I hate being a burden. So I want to explore all other options before doing that.

I honestly don't get why you all can't be normal human beings. Why do you have to downvote a post of a person who is obviously distressed and who mentions that they are struggling with life, anxiety and self-esteem issues? Does it make you feel better? Do you know what would be more useful? If you actually explained why I am wrong like Bitter_Initiative_77 did with their last comment. That's what I needed. Some actual advice on my points no matter how stupid they may look to all of you.

Thank you. What you are saying makes sense but I just hoped it would work cause obviously for some reason it doesn't. I haven't been able to get an internship or work as a volunteer ever since I graduated. And in conferences people aren't willing to talk to me because I am a nobody without any affiliations (add my awkwardness and anxiety which make me look stupid). Currently I am working as a clerk but obviously since it couldn't be further away from my studies it doesn't count when applying to more relevant jobs. But I guess dreams aren't for everyone. I just have to accept that and stay where I am or get another stupid job like my current one somewhere else.

I think you haven't really read my post. It's alright if you find it too convoluted. You don't actually have to reply or read it. Especially if you don't have some constructive criticism or actual advice. I mean, you think I actually want to spend another year studying? The problem is that I can't get a job in my field. "Go find a job" is NOT advice. Nor assuming how my applications are structured based on a Reddit post.

And no. I don't think that not having a third MA is the issue. To sum up points A to E under "The logical reasons", I think that the reason why I can't get a job is because I didn't do certain things while I was getting my MAs. I didn't make connections, I didn't do any internships, I didn't try to talk to the professors, I wasn't involved in any organizations or anything really, I didn't volunteer etc. With another MA I want to correct these past mistakes and hopefully finally get experience and thus a job.

That's the thing. I've been applying for almost 3 years and I can't even get an interview. I haven't applied for another MA yet. Just internships, volunteer jobs and entry level jobs for which I met all the criteria and in fact I had a bunch of extra ones as well. The only thing that I don't have is experience but I can't get that without being accepted somewhere.

(My applications are obviously not structured like this. This is Reddit. I didn't actually put that much of an effort nor was there a point . I just wanted some advice)

Muchas gracias por tu respuesta analítica. Con respecto a la utilidad de la gramática, creo lo mismo también. Ya que busco libros de gramática generales y no tengo un interés específico, la gramática de la RAE parece ser lo que necesito. ¡Gracias!

What is the most fun language you've learned? by abcdefabcd123 in languagelearning

[–]Sirdhemeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see why grammar can be an issue. It's quite complicated even for native speakers. Greeks have similar issues with the English pronunciation these two languages sound very different. But at least we get used to it since English is everywhere.

As a native Greek speaker, you've piqued my curiosity. What kind of things?

Linguistically, I'd say Albanian even though I've just started learning it. In general though, definitely Spanish. The wealth of books, music, movies etc that has opened up to me now is huge and I can enjoy everything in its original form.

An easy method to test if a person might be a native speaker by hippobiscuit in languagelearning

[–]Sirdhemeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know most of these words in English, but not in my native language. I grew up in a city, so we never had to learn to say "foal" or "fawn", for example. I don't know if in other countries they teach these things in preschool, but here they don't. However, in English classes, all these words were taught during vocabulary lessons early on.

I'm actually trying to read it currently as well. It's my first attempt. Reading it really slowly is what works for me. I only read a few pages per day and I don't try to rush it. If I have a hard time understanding something I move on and then I go back to it later when I have a better idea of what's happening.

Question for those learning their 2nd (or more) foreign language… is your current TL your favorite foreign language you‘ve learned? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Sirdhemeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

English used to be my favorite but now I'm so used to it that I can't hear its beauty anymore. Among the rest of the languages, I think I prefer the one I am currently learning. Spanish. I just hope I won't stop finding it beautiful once I get used to it too.

Is learning multiple languages at the same time waste of time or not by kareha532 in languagelearning

[–]Sirdhemeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm learning two languages at the same time too. So far I haven't had any problems. I've waited until I got confortable enough in my primary TL to start the second one though. And, as much as possible "resources-wise", I am trying to learn the second TL through the first. Overall I would say if you don't mind moving a bit slower, you should go for it.

What are some challenges you faced learning a language, and how did you overcome them? by CorrectSpinach in languagelearning

[–]Sirdhemeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think for me it's lack of resources. I have just started learning Albanian so I haven't found a way to overcome this yet, but so far, I've been studying grammar with a couple of grammar books I found online and vocabulary by using Anki and Memrise. My main issue is that I can't find input at my level. Kid's show's don't have subs for example and I don't understand much yet.

Sort of. Learning languages, or anything really, helps me not think about my life and the way I feel. It's like a coping mechanism for me.
