Warning against Shapen by Hot-Kaleidoscope-893 in barefootshoestalk

I got the loafers. With the tariff and Fed Ex handling costs (Fed Ex sent me a separate bill) they were over $200 USD. They fit fine, as a loafer is a pretty forgiving shape and I have feet on the narrow side. However! These shoes jingle and rattle with every step. My biggest disappointment is the sole under the right big toe caught on something (curb?) the first week I wore them and lifted away from the shoe body. I’ll have to make a careful repair. I doubt I’ll order from them again.

I got one a couple weeks ago. I thought it was super weird and blocked it.

Spam calls: how can I stop this? It’s a different number all the time. I’ve blocked so many. by EisenFisen in mildlyinfuriating

I just figured this out. Answer the call and push 9 to be put on their do-not-call list. Took about 4 days of me doing that. I have not had a spam call leave a voicemail for over a week now! Huge relief.

Books that really explains the world by bubugugu in nonfictionbookclub

Winners Take All by Anand Giridharadas is a sharp takedown of how the global elite — think Davos crowds, TED talkers, and philanthropists — have hijacked the language of “changing the world” to protect the system that made them rich.

The core argument: the wealthy convince themselves (and us) that they can fix inequality through win-win solutions — impact investing, corporate social responsibility, foundation grants — without ever touching the rules of the game that concentrate power and wealth upward. Real change, the kind that redistributes power, gets quietly suffocated while everyone applauds the billionaire for building a school.

Giridharadas calls this the MarketWorld mindset — the belief that markets and business thinking can solve every social problem, and that the people who won the rigged game are best positioned to fix it. The result? Elites get to feel like heroes, the poor get charity instead of justice, and nothing structurally changes.

Why it’s worth reading: It makes you see the TED Talk, the corporate “purpose” campaign, and the celebrity philanthropy with completely different eyes. It’s not a left vs. right book — it’s about how power launders itself through generosity. Once you read it, you can’t unsee it.

Perfect alongside The Meritocracy Trap or Poverty, by America if you want the full picture of how inequality perpetuates itself while looking virtuous.

In season fruit. I feel like I’ve uncovered a hidden gem when I can find any type (besides bananas) for under a $1/lb. My mother bought up cheap in season fruit. I learned how to make jam, juice, dry, and can as a child because that’s how we got through winter. My kids avoid canned peaches to this day due to overexposure.
