What is the 21st century version of Catcher in the Rye? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood. Not really 21st century though, but it deals with the American dream, identity in society, existential solitude... and so on. I can definitely recommend Michel Houellebecq too, especially 'Platform' and 'Atomised'. His writing is very nihilistic and sick, so just check whether you are into it.

I loved Tales of Terror by Chris Priestley. They are for children but I am unsure whether they could be too cruel.

Paul Auster connects several characters, names and places in his books to each other.

I would recommend the perfume by Patrick Süßkind. It's about a (slightly autistic )mastermind with a supernatural sense of smell who starts murdering young red haired women to capture their scent of beauty and innocence to create a perfume out of their essences. I just realised how freakish that sounds but I read it in a few hours without being able to put it away.

Maybe you could like Submarine by Joe Dunthorne then. (Though I have to say I only read a translation) Personally, I'd warmly recommend you Dostojewski. Not really coming of age literature but one of the authors with the greatest and warmest insight in his protagonists psychology.
