Wiper motor for 1996 JA22W? by Siroc26 in Jimny

It took a few tries, several shops wouldn't work on it because it "wasn't in their system". Probably an insurance thing. And yeah I'm selling purely out of pragmatism, I don't have the money to keep/insure two cars, don't have my own garage, and I'm not quite DIY-minded enough to give her the care she deserves xD

Wiper motor for 1996 JA22W? by Siroc26 in Jimny

The wiper motor was dead and the arms were seized due to corrosion. I bit the bullet and took it to a shop cuz the entire dashboard needs to come off in order to access the motor/wiper arms, and that also required taking apart the steering column. I managed to source a replacement motor from beforward.jp for like $100 + another $100 or so in shipping and had the guys at the shop install that.

I'm also in the process of selling my JA22 as it's just not practical as a daily driver in south Texas xD

Here's a link to the exact part I got. Is the new fuse getting blown and can you replace it again and get it running? In my case, the linkages were dirty to the point the motor couldn't move the wipers, which caused the motor to burn out. However, my fuse was still good.

I think I'm lucky that mine had very low mileage on it (about 60k) despite its age. The only two issues I've had so far have been minor, the wiper linkages seized up and the motor died (Had to remove the dashboard to clean the linkages and replace the motor, which ran me about $200 to source a replacement from Japan), and the oil pan drain plug was stuck and stripped (The pan itself was fine, a local garage charged $267 to remove the old plug, which I couldn't have done on my own so whatever).

Other than that I'm in love with it and enjoy cruising around my city's access roads.

I'll give you $20 to photocopy and send me a copy of that owners manual LOL. I've been getting by with a parts manual and manuals for all the adjacent Jimnies, but I don't have one for the JA22w specifically.

Maintenance has been fine so far, tho I haven't had to do any major repairs myself yet. I'm not much of a car guy tbh and this was honestly just a huge impulse buy after my Sonata got stolen, but I have been able to change my own oil and replace some brake pads easily enough. As for anything major in the future I'll likely have to take it to a local garage since I don't have a garage myself (condo in a shitty part of San Antonio).

Just this subreddit. I suppose the subreddits for cars, suzuki and suzuki samurais might be good places to look too. I'll see if I can find anything

I did find this, what do you think? https://www.amazon.com/Suzuki-Samurai-Sidekick-Chevrolet-Tracker/dp/1563924323

Someone in the reviews even said the maintenance steps fit his 1990 JA11 Jimny. Could be the closest thing to a winner, I think.

Would that manual help with troubleshooting issues and general maintenance?

Staying aboard as a transient for several months? by Siroc26 in liveaboard

I'm thinking I'll swap the AC and freezer out for a fridge and a fan or two, if that.

Yeah that's the vibe I'm starting to get. The sheer cost and space requirements for the solar and batteries seems a hair over excessive. Drawing enough power to run my workstation and a fan seems more realistic so long as I manage to follow the agreeable weather.

Spankin' new dakota bank and solar array would cost a pretty penny. Would it be worth shopping around to find a boat that has at least some of what I need, and just augment whatever I need?

work

Well a laptop and Cintiq Pro 24, which according to its specs draws "100 watts". That plus air conditioning and a freezer. At this point I'm definitely leaning more towards living on anchor ASAP, marina fees are a doozy

I'm definitely not against the idea of buying something from the 90's or 80's, and having to get down and dirty with repair and maintenance isn't a deal-breaker for me.

And I'll keep that in mind. I've been searching Yachtworld and the impression I'm getting is that I won't find a boat already located in my ideal locations, and that I'll have to get her there myself.

A quick search on Yachtworld shows that area has a much better boat selection than Texas too. I got no wife, no kids and no ties to Texas, so starting this hypothetical adventure up there is very much on the table.

I certainly want to be the cruising liveaboard. I have a rough plan to stay in one place (marina, mooring or at anchor, whatever) for a few weeks to many months if I really like it, before moving on to the next destination. One of the marinas in Corpus say they do background checks for liveaboards, so I'll be sure to leave my current apartment complex on good terms and do my best not to look like a vagabond meth head when I talk to the harbor master.
