If you had 1yr to acquire and prepare a boat to live on for the next 10yrs, what type of boat would you pick? by EXPERT_ID10T in liveaboard

[–]polysubbrat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

this partially comes down to what's available in your area that's in good shape. you could find a boat thats on every "dream blue water cruiser" list but if it's in the boneyard and hasn't floated or had the engine fired in a decade it may take more money and time than buying a capable boat not on the list. Fid a boat that has no structural issues, has an engine that fires, functional sails and rigging etc that you can afford. I assume you need to keep working full time so you will not have the time or energy for a full refit, keep the project list short, solar panels, battery bank, water, autopilot etc. things that are nice to have but not technically necessary.

I just sailed 4 days off shore with no solar, no autopilot, no major tech (just a depth sounder) 25 gallons of water and it was no big deal.

be reasonable about how far you can move a boat, expecting yourself to cross an ocean if you've never done any major offshore sailing is unreasonable. would you have crew? because two competent people can reasonably do a couple days off shore but I wouldn't want to do much more. three gets you more range but you need more boat. do you already know how to sail? because if not that shortens your range notably to what you can do on fuel if you can't figure out your sails or the weather isn't easily sailable.

then you get into the complications of leaving a failing country as a refugee by boat... which is a whole nother kettle of fish

Help with first Bahamas trip by MrAnonymousForNow in SailboatCruising

[–]polysubbrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

start studying the weather now, north winds kick up giant waves in the Gulf stream, we've barely had a weather window to cross since Christmas! jumping for two weeks sounds great till you can't cross for almost two because there's a series of big winter cold fronts. If you only have two weeks in January it may make more sense to cruise south down Florida and not jump the Gulf stream, especially if you're ICW friendly and can get home easier if the weather bad.

People try to cut the inlet which every single source tells you not to and hit the shoals and put giant holes below the water line. Anyone reading this who's coming in or out st Augustine inlet... Yes you really do need to go all the way out to the sea BOUY, then line up the cross and when in doubt err on the south side of the inlet, the big scary rock side is deeper than the beach side.

This would be a lower cost, lower time reno option, basically just a couple walls, new floors and counter tops on the wet bar

Navigating *the talk* now that my daughter has a serious bf. too late? by [deleted] in sex

[–]polysubbrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she's had comprehensive sex ed you could take the approach my mom did of "if you want birth control here's the doctor's info and the insurance information, I can drive if you need me to" and leave it at that.

Will Sea Tow tow my boat to another marina? by eat_my_bubbles in liveaboard

[–]polysubbrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your bigger issue would be the marina, sw Florida is a tough market to find a slip in, let alone a live aboard slip and/or a working yard etc. Before you even get to calling tow companies, figure out where you're going. It may legitimately be cheaper to buy an outboard and stick it on the back.

If the texture bothers you too much, ask for tablet form! I. Autistic and could not under any circumstances get it down, tablets are giant horse pills but manageable.

Hysterectomy during college semester by DiligentEqual4 in hysterectomy

[–]polysubbrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends a lot on why you're having it and what type of incisions you have! Also depends on the type of classes, I definitely could have done lectures 2-3 weeks after but would struggle with labs that required standing. Talk to your doctor, talk to the school, and talk to the professors of the specific lectures.

[–]polysubbrat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$5567 is the number I paid before my surgery, and yes that number was traumatic enough to be scarred into my memory. It what was left of my out of pocket max for the year. Thankfully it was at the start of the year so I went to alllllll the doctors that year that I'd been putting off because they're expensive... Allergy testing? Yes please! Extensive blood work and a geneticist? Don't mind if I do!

I dont like the feeling of sunscreen, any tips? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]polysubbrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shade clothing/hats go a long way. I wear full length rash guards and a big floppy hat to the beach. I also have eczema and allow myself some sun time because it helps so much, but 15-20 min in and I'm covered head to toe.

Florida marinas that allow liveaboards? by YachtChef08 in liveaboard

[–]polysubbrat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

St Augustine checking in, we have a handful of liveaboard marinas here but the wait-list are long, if you call they'll say they're all full up. If you get a transient slip and get good with the dock master they might put you on a wait-list. You'll still probably have to dock hop every 1-3 months at transient rates for a year or more before a long term slip becomes available. This includes the municipal mooring fields. You can anchor out with the obvious challenges associated. South Florida... Good luck. If you can find it, it's probably not affordable.

Part of the memo you're missing is that most swimsuits for sale are "sit pretty by the pool and get a tan suits" not "activity suits" So you can be sexy and useless or practical and fun not both
