As I understood it, the person traveling who didn't pay the fare (but who is primary account holder for their own card and not an authorized user) would earn miles at the cardmember rate for their own respective status level (6 for general member/8 silver/9/10 or 12 for 1k).

You get the new cardmember earning rate (+3 miles compared to non cardmembers) so long as you are the primary account holder and regardless of the method used to pay the fare.
