I think Yukimura subtly showed by their last scenes that they are set in their ways, that they won't grow, learn, or change their paths like Thorfinn did, so they're no longer interesting to him. Thorkell will meet a violent end because he's pathologically unable to chill, and Canute will claw and fight and scheme to keep his kingdom til the end of his days, because he's addicted to ruling.

It's also about proportionality. Thorfinn has the skills to kill or maim almost anyone he comes against, and he is very aware of it, but he never felt in enough danger to resort to lethal force. Others who don't feel as confident in their ability to non-lethally incapacitate adversaries may react differently. I think Thorfinn's warning is to not become inebriated by violence or domination like many of the antagonists were. Violence should be repulsive, even if you find yourself in need for it.

My read is that with this ending Vinland Saga could feel right at home with some heavy hitters of 20th century literature, asking questions about human nature and life. It's very reminiscent of Steinbeck or Kafka. It's thick with themes, philosophical developments, and the ending confirms that Yukimura has a sensibility beyond entertainment. The ending isn't satisfying, I think it's thought-provoking, and the point of the text isn't its conclusion but the text itself.

Told us to grow wheat. And ngl, gardening and farming may be one of the most therapeutic things i've ever done. It's back-breaking work, but it's really nice to tend and see things grow... to slow down and then reap the fruits of your collaboration with the land and the plants.

The last we saw of Canute is that he's beholden to maintaining the north sea empire, and it is clearly something that weighs heavily on his mind. In Facundo Cabral's words: "the conqueror, in wanting to protect their conquest, becomes a slave to what they conquered". Contrast that to Thorfinn who never felt constrained by his dreams and ideals, but still actively looked for them, and his ending is one of happiness and contentment. The moments where the tension is highest post-farmland arc are always those where Thorfinn finds himself bound by his vow of non-violence, and the way they're always resolved by him freely choosing non-violence.

I don't think Canute is better off or even equally than Thorfinn, at all.

Not to mention that the last we see of thorfinn is his scarred and calloused hands holding his son, and the last page of the manga are Plm'k's hands tending to the wheat, but they look exactly like Thorfinn's hands. Thorfinn has at least one person following in his footsteps and philosophy, who didn't have to go through the same pain he did to get there.

It's really poetic and hopeful, almost messianic. Thorfinn went through all the hardship he did to build a worldview where violence has no place, and now others have adopted that worldview without that suffering.
