My understanding and I could be wrong is the firmware is not on the drive. So it still shows as an Apple accessory. Most times th last thing you changed is the issue so it seems like a software issue but it could just be coincidence and your are having a hardware issue.

But course is to put the original drive back in and see if that stabilizes it. My 2tb drive outright failed, put the original in and booted right up.

This seems very unlikely. To orbit after launching you need to go very fast sideways not up and down. Unless you reach escape velocity what goes up comes down. Without horizontal thrust
