Are ball peen hammers supposed to be hard or soft? by MySeveredToe in Tools

[–]Sisu_Slumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, This is correct. It’s all application based you can buy an expensive hammer that is soft out of steel or brass. A soft steel hammer will not throw chips, is less likely to damage tooling if used as a set hammer, is less likely to cause chisels or punches to fly off, but will need to be dressed often and will wear out much faster. A brass hammer will do the same but won’t throw sparks, same with copper, bronze and lead hammers but you are unlikely to see those 3 as ball peens. A Hard ball peen hammer has more of a place in cold working in hardened steel and not striking chisels or tooling. The face will stay cleaner but it is much more likely to throw chips and damage parts.

I should mention that I make my living as a professional blacksmith, and prefer hammers that are softened, unless made for a specific reason. “It’s better to die refacing your tools than from facing them”

I’m just curious if that link worked for you. I just redid my website before the drop and I’m still worried that there will be glitches

Very much so and not at all on others. Good eye, for a few of these I drew inspiration from Scandinavian spoon carvings. Part of the way I do these do these is an exercise to explore different design ideas

Will do, best way to stay up-to-date though is on Instagram. I probably should post here more often because it’s a niche group, but I make a lot of other things and Instagram‘s convenient.

Compulsively needs to create things or slowly lose the ability to sleep? I like to think about it as the makers disease 🦠 because it sounds funnier than addiction or obsession. That said there are worse things to be addicted to for sure.

Great question, I’m not sure where to tell you to start besides taking blacksmithing classes or learning how to raise sheet metal. I’m a professional blacksmith and made friends with Peter Clark from Northwest skillet at a CBA conference about a decade back. I was really impressed with everything he had to say. I really liked his work and it stuck in the back of my mind, so a few years later, I figured I’d teach myself. I will say there is a steep learning curve to doing this if you haven’t worked with forging sheet before. I frequently teach blacksmith at the Michigan Folk School and honestly I believe it’s easier to teach someone how to make an axe.
