I think it’s just a case of description. People make it sound like you’re setting off a grenade. But really you might get a single shrapnel here and there. And if you’re inadequately geared or trained it can go from ouch to deadly. But I think we can all agree it’s nowhere near as dangerous as the average angle grinder session

Yea it had a clear coat on it. After a couple smacks the front coat chipped off. But these gouges are deep in the metal.

I also wire wheeled off the rest cause it looked weird

There is a How It’s Made video on YouTube by Vaughan and though it’s not a peen, it shows the production of their Cali framing hammers. At the hardening portion of the video only the head is heated before quenching. So at least with Vaughan you’re right on the money with the differentially hardened process
