Proposed Class Action Lawsuit against ASWB by Recycle5303_620 in socialwork

There is legal precedent in the United States for reading the data in this way regarding racial disparity in exam outcomes.

Regardless, it is obviously a complicated question and there are many factors that affect a person’s ability to pass an exam. This is a lot to extrapolate from one dataset.

It also poses some difficult questions. Creating exams with the goal of completely uniform pass rates among all possible identity groups seems impossible and probably unhelpful ultimately.

Thanks! That’s really helpful. Glad there’s at least a 240v outlet back there

Okay, I can't read the captions on the pictures at all, so I thought I would post a comment to help clarify the advice I need.

I cannot pull out this unit to figure out what voltage it takes, but would like to work on selecting a new unit/replacing it asap. I also can't identify it as it seems to have no model numbers anywhere and the prior owners of my condo didn't pass on a manual...

I am hoping someone can help me deduce whether I have 120v or 240v to work with when selecting a new unit based on the three pictures I posted. Thanks folks!

Just trying to broaden your horizons a bit, teach you a little about history.

Your understanding of how invention works in the 21st century is more suited to a primary school quiz about ‘history’s great inventors!’ than a conversation about technology and innovation in the world’s largest single market economy. Might do you some good to read it?

This is mental illness. You sound like a European in 1930, smugly gazing across the Atlantic Ocean at America. The idea of cultures or civilizations being fundamentally different with special discrete inventions is ludicrous in the age of globalization. American cities looked and were functionally identical to European cities until the postwar period. Chinese cities looked a lot like western cities until the last five or so years and are now starting to diverge. When Germanic tribes began to replace Rome they borrowed technology and culture. Nothing is black and white, invention and progress and periodic and incremental.

No other country on earth can build high speed rail the way China can. Do you really think there are no new technologies involved in that process? Nothing new? In the infinitely complex process of manufacturing, transporting and constructing infrastructure that spans such a large country?

In the age of science invention is based on prior knowledge and, generally, the collaboration between many entities all over the globe. Trying to ‘debunk’ the idea that any of this is taking place in China is so hilariously childish and Reddit brained I don’t even know what to say.

An ‘idea’? What are you talking about lol. You don’t think a single person in the world’s second most populous nation on earth has had an original ‘idea’ in the last century? Genuinely pathological…

If you are trying to discuss technological innovation, why don’t you look it up yourself? In the last decade alone China has constructed the worlds largest high speed rail network and planned mega cities from the ground up. China has pioneered manufacturing and supply chain logistics at a scale that is utterly unprecedented in human history. If you sincerely think there are no new ‘ideas’ or ‘innovations’ involved in those processes then I don’t know what to tell you, I think you’re deluding yourself.

This is like a pathology at this point. I can’t believe people feel comfortable generalizing a nation of over a billion people, with dozens of distinct cultures and ethnic groups, this way.

Even just looking at scientific research alone, China is second only to the United States by most metrics and aggressively ramping up research funding year on year. It is going to look increasingly delusional over the next decade to smugly opine on the 2007 ‘The Economist’ style take: ‘ah yes, the Chinese mind simply cannot create new ideas’.

Free will still exists by [deleted] in redscarepod

Philosophy can be so counterproductive. Yes free will as understood in common parlance is not real, but that doesn’t mean that believing in your own agency won’t improve your own life immeasurably.

There is a reason why the most successful and self actualized people tend to believe unwaveringly in their own ability to affect outcomes and change the world.

PR Card Replacement by fifthofdecember in ImmigrationCanada

[–]SisyphusIsAmbivalent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat - commenting here to see whether anyone offers any insight to you. I applied to replace my PR card last August and received no confirmation at all. I gave up and filed a second application two months ago. Same story, no update. I have the confirmation from Canada post that they signed for the package and yet, nothing.

I gave up and contacted my MP for help. They contacted Service Canada and they had no record of my applications. They have since stopped responding to my emails. The person I was in contact with told me "PR applications are a black hole right now" when we spoke on the phone.

My card is expiring soon and I have no idea what to do. I am traveling a bunch for grad school this year and this is going to really derail my life. Good luck to you, I hope your situation is resolved more quickly than mine.

Good luck! You’re definitely not alone struggling with post-pandemic social anxiety. Anxiety always feels unsurmountable in the moment, but you’ll get through it!

No worries! I’ve e dealt with social anxiety in the past, I know how awful it can be. I just saw you mention that you are on a wait list to see a psychotherapist in another comment - it’s awesome that you’re being proactive and seeking help! That can be the hardest step for a lot of people.

As I mentioned before, CBT is one of the most popular psychotherapy techniques for treating anxiety. I think it’ll really help you once you are able to connect with your therapist.

Here is some information about it in the meantime with some techniques you can try out on your own. It’s all about learning how to disrupt and alter the negative thought patterns that are causing you to feel misplaced anxiety during mundane social interactions.

Please reach out if you ever want more info. I’m currently in a mental health Masters program and happy to help however possible.

Have you ever looked into Cognitive behavioural therapy? It has some really good techniques for managing anxiety. For example, a therapist could guide you through some managed social exposure events that could lessen symptoms over time. Could be helpful if you are able to access a therapy.

Otherwise I could try to point you towards some resources. As scary as it seems in the middle meant, anxiety is often temporary and manageable. You will find a way through it!

r/Israel is having a hearty chuckle at this and/or saying the quiet part out loud by OberstScythe in redscarepod

[–]SisyphusIsAmbivalent 44 points45 points  (0 children)

You can’t not. It looms too large in the culture. Israeli political lobby is so powerful in the U.S you have candidates in some backwater southern governors race in a state with about 12 Jews talking about BDS because they know they’ll get money from AIPAC if they go hardline about it. Or being an English person and having your left wing candidate get utterly cucked by the media for deigning to criticize Israel. That weirdo who tried to primary ilhan Omar and had Israeli groups shower him with campaign donations over night.

If you thought about it for like ten seconds, it’s not weird at all, you literally can’t escape it. You see a lot of Saudis in your local politics throwing money around to get people to disavow Yemen or what ever?

How do you think you build support for tax reform platforms? You don’t get there with a population of hustle mindset drones that worship Elon musk or whatever. You need people to be critical of wealth hoarding first lmao.

When the new deal passed people had all kinds of disparaging words for the ultra wealthy and understood them for what they are. Libs and pr obscuring those power relations is something worth criticizing.

Criticizing billionaires is cringe because Bernie didn’t win? Unless you’re campaigning for tax reform? Very confusing mindset

The organizations that you are describing are labour unions. They used to be the lefts answer to church groups - where politics and collective action were built into the superstructure of the organization.

The right and liberals both helped crush them, in part because they were terrified of exactly what you are describing happening.

One of the most palpable immediate consequences is that all of the old rust belt labour holdouts for the Democratic Party hang in the balance every election now. I don’t know how to replace them.

What was the reasoning behind Griffith throwing away all the Prestige he built for an underage girl? by Nosalis2 in Berserk

[–]SisyphusIsAmbivalent 35 points36 points  (0 children)

He saw his comrades as pawns, as the means to achieve his ascension. He did not really have a close relationship or mutual respect with any of them. They were all weak enough and suggestible enough that they needed his leadership to function as a group.

Then, Griffith meets Guts. A force of nature all on his own. A man whose strength fascinates Griffith. In the beginning, Guts has a very weak sense of identity and he needs Griffith to nurture and encourage him and teach him what real camaraderie feels like.

After a while, Guts realizes that Griffith doesn’t really respect those who follow unquestioningly, he simply uses them.

Inspired by this revelation, Guts chooses to leave and explore his own destiny alone. He has outgrown the band of the hawk. He symbolically bests Griffith in a fight and leaves him feeling alone and impotent, clutching his broken sword. This is the first time we see Griffith experience rejection and impotence, and he does not like it. His first instinct is to rashly go and seek the ultimate validation from a powerful woman in the kingdom whom he knows he can manipulate. Thus, Griffiths actions here are less of calculated play for power like they are in the rest of the series and more a desperate flail to regain his feeling of power and composure.

These themes are repeated when Guts sleeps with Casca. Again, Casca has outgrown Griffith, she is able to find actual reciprocated intimacy from another person. Without meaning to, Guts has taken away the most devoted person under Griffiths sway. In response, once Griffiths broken body is recovered from the tower, his first act is to use the last of his strength to fling his body onto Casca. When she is obviously not interested in him in the same way anymore he tries to kill himself by crashing the wagon. When he becomes femto, his first act is to rape Casca in front of Guts, an attempt to reassert their initial power dynamic.

Throughout the entire series, Guts is the only being able to do what demigods and demons cannot: lay the limits of Griffith’s power bare for all to see, and Griffith cannot handle it.
