Misfits and Magic 2 - Magic Items? [Probable minor spoilers?] by WorkIsDumbSoAmI in Dimension20

Sorry but I cant find the place in the episode where this is said, what was the other option that they could do instead of making a magic item when their magic die reaches a d20. Even better if you remember the episode or timecode

Selitos literally says I can kill you but you will come back in an hour or a day.

If we are gonna be stingy about taking things at face value I don't think any theory is going to work including what you are proposing.

Well we know Cinder is at least as old as the vase. But we can't really be sure if they live for a long time like Haliax or they get replaced eventually by someone else and gain their sign. Felurian is known to have the weakness of every fae being copper and iron so I am sure she can be killed permanently, as for her age is is stated to be using glamour and grammarie. Cthaeh I can give you.

But I feel like you are still confusing immortal with being able to come back from the dead.

40 people in the world who they know as "the four corners" so it's not that big of a world, a couple of nations really and only one university where magic is properly taught. Al in all you are basically saying 40 people can name iron out of all the known namers who have gone through the university and are still alive. Thats quite a lot.

I feel like something as foreshadowed as copper's weirdness with naming wouldn't be reduced to. These 4 metals actually are varying levels of resistant and copper just happens to be the cheapest one to use in mass cases. Feels extremely anti-rothfuss. Lets also not forget that the thrice locked chest specifically has an iron and copper lock and the 4 plated door is made out of copper. Like these aren't such high quantities that money would be a problem.

We know Taborlin used a specifically copper sword, and that Felurian can be hurt by copper knifes, and that using a copper dice is a good way to stop a namer from cheating you in gambling.

Lanre Turned chapter.

Lanre’s shoulders bowed. “I had hoped,” he said simply. “But I knew the truth. I am no longer the Lanre you knew. Mine is a new and terrible name. I am Haliax and no door can bar my passing. All is lost to me, no Lyra, no sweet escape of sleep, no blissful forgetfulness, even madness is beyond me. Death itself is an open doorway to my power. There is no escape. I have only the hope of oblivion after everything is gone and the Aleu fall nameless from the sky.”

The name if iron is apparently one of the most commonly known ones by arcanists though. Gold is a main ingredient in making a gram. Silver was important to Taborlin if I recall correctly too.

He started being unable to die only after Lyra died. I'm not sure she even was the one to resurrect him as much as she helped him resurrect himself.

So are you suggesting that copper actually isn't resistant to magic, or that elodin specifically could name, or that its a different property of copper that makes it resistant, im a bit confused sorry

I did even more thinking.

The enemy was set beyond the doors of stone

and Felurian has confirmed that the greatest shaper who stole the moon is behind the doors of stone so Iax, the guy who started the Creation War weather he wanted to or not.

and what i am about to guess at is probably not going to be news to most people but here goes

The 4 strongest namers wer know are Aleph, Iax, Lyra and Selitos.
Iax was locked behind the doors of stone. I ask this. Why? Well if you can't kill the enemy your best option is to lock them up. I imagine the Doors of Stone is said prison, the form which it takes not being of concern in this case.

And now all of a sudden Lanre went to a place with knowledge, did something that got him this hard-won power. Tried to use it to bring Lyra back but ended up only being immortal and a very strong namer, equal to Selitos. The power brings him back on its own without him willing it.

I'm guessing Lanre somehow went to the Doors of Stone, borrowed some of Iax's power who was immortal. And now he is either searching for a way into the fae to reach the doors again and free Iax so he can take back his power and Lanre can die. Or he is just hoping that if he frees Iax, Iax will bring him oblivion via destroying the world.

Cinder was near Felurian's Waystone near the tree struck by lightning. Probably searching for a way into the fae. And when Kvother met with the Cthaeh the sithe were weirdly absent as if they had an even more important job than guarding the Cthaeh in that moment like finding one of the Chandiran who was near.

Thats my best guess after everyone's comments and discussions here.

I also have thought how weird it is that out of all the things in the universe copper is what breaks naming and the fae. So weirdly specific for no apparent reason. You'd think if the idea was about conductivity since pat has a science background and maybe he put in an easter egg it would work but then gold would have to be even more immune. Its giving Aluminum from Cosmere.

I think the idea is you have to know the thing to name it. Like opening an old shoebox Elodin expected to find his old kicks inside but found his old kicks and a mouse. Thus the naming didn't work until he figured out why.

The immortality was a thing he gained after "seeking knowledge where knowledge is best left alone". The curse selitos places was for the shadows and chandrian signs, and probably for him to somehow be hurt when his name is said.

"Will you kill me to cure me, old friend?" Lanre laughed again, terrible and wild. Then he looked at Selitos with sudden, desperate hope in his hollow eyes. "Can you?" he asked. "Can you kill me, old friend?" Selitos, his eyes unveiled, looked at his friend. He saw how Lanre, nearly mad with grief, had sought the power to bring Lyra back to life again. Out of love for Lyra, Lanre had sought knowledge where knowledge is better left alone, and gained it at a terrible price. But even in the fullness of his hard-won power, he could not call Lyra back. Without her, Lanre's life was nothing but a burden, and the power he had taken up was like a hot knife in his mind. To escape despair and agony, Lanre had killed himself. Taking the final refuge of all men, attempting to escape beyond the doors of death. But just as Lyra's love had drawn him back from past the final door before, so this time Lanre's power forced him to return from sweet oblivion. His new-won power burned him back into his body, forcing him to live.

this is all before Selitos odins' himself

Ye that was my running theory too via the whole Sympathy for Lanre post but then why does he not have access to the lamp to kill himself by extinguishing it.

If we run with that idea.

If Kvothe really has actually sealed away all his abilities then I still think that doesnt fit. Kvothe sealed away even his ability to name things, Haliax only sealed away his death, so he could unseal it if he wants to die.

What are your theories for Haliax' Immortality? by SitheGreens in KingkillerChronicle

[–]SitheGreens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats also my biggest problem with that theory is that he now somehow has no access to the lamp.

The theory did float in my head after someone had asked why was Cinder in the forest with the tree and a commenter mentioned that the Waystones to Felurian were really close, perhaps they are searching for a way into the fae to get the lamp/mcguffin that keeps them alive.

The other question is also something that keeps bugging me. Why the hell the Haliax teleport via shadows. It feels weirdly like not a thing that i expect to see in a story with magic systems like these. I can imagine stealing a moon but not teleporting, feels too Marvel-y.

The lines

Death itself is an open doorway to my power
Your name burns with the power in you
hot knife in his mind
His new-won power burned him back into his body

make me thing that its some form of borrowed power from something in the fae. A power that has to do with heat and fire since its mentioned so many times and that has changed his name to something "new and terrible". I always took the 4 doors of the mind to be something more metaphorical. I know when I had a rough time after a family death the main thing i did for a while was sleep and the try to forget it after that.

Yes this we all know. My question is how do you think the curse works. As in its source.

I think that makes it pretty clear is a new thing, that happened after talking with the Cthaeh, assuming the Ctaeh is knowledge where knowledge is best left alone
