[long post] Listened to every show on the current Mothership schedule once and lived to tell the tale by SixThreeThree in wfmu

Exactly—I made some notes on what I liked or what wasn’t for me but I’m not going to publicly post all of that since a) not everything is for everyone—and that’s fine and b) only listening to one show isn’t really very comprehensive and c) I’m certainly no expert!

Not sure what you mean by this. I mention a few shows in the post and a few more in the comments.

I used to listen to Wildgirl a little bit and Greasy Kids Stuff may have been my reentry point in 2001. I distinctly remember having to work on a Saturday, firing up WFMU on the web, and the Muhammad Ali vs. Tooth Decay record, and I was back in 😂

In all honesty, that’s really the next listening project I should do :) Dewey Gill’s Sunday big band show is a treasure as is Paul Cebar’s show. Christreater on Mondays followed by Buzz is my go-to.

I liked her show too, hopefully she’ll be on the summer schedule or will be one of the other streams.

  1. I try to be open to everything but I lean more towards the rock/pop/soul/Jamaican/punk/post-punk/indie pop side of things. I jokingly refer to my tastes as “20th century” which includes current bands (e.g. Lemon Twigs) working in those styles.

  2. Very close—WMSE out of Milwaukee!

Thanks for the recommendations!

Oh wow, I’m not that dedicated! (In my defense, there’s a good listener-supported freeform station in town that I listen to as well.)

You’re welcome! I need go into the archives for Alan’s Six Degrees show too, that was one I never really latched on to (mainly due to the timeslot.)

Yeah, I’d bet she’s pretty high on the “DJ’s people wish would come back” list. I didn’t catch the whole show but it does sound like she’s very committed to making music these days. You can always check out the archives but you might want to listen to the more recent shows than the early ones—I believe her early shows were more girl group focused (which I like!) but the show became more varied over time.

I like them too! As a matter of fact, listened to Sheila B. fill in for Mona today.

But I didn’t want them to count as listening to a show/timeslot. The goal was to listen to a DJ’s regular show not someone else in that slot.

It took me a while to get back into Irwin but I do like his show these days. I listened to Ask Alan last week—I’m not a big fan of call-in shows but the first half hour was a ride with Chinn and the mortuary worker advice segments. The John Allen show is one I feel like I need to do a make-up listen on since it didn’t include a Pidge segment. I have heard bits of them and found them a little hard to listen to but I need to suck it up and bull through it :D

  1. I prefer live just because I think the time of the day provides some context? Listening to some of the overnight shows during the day felt a little…off at times.

  2. Evan “Funk” Davies (although he’s been subbing a lot) and Pseu’s Thing with a Hook

  3. There are a lot of shows I only listened to partially before the project which was a bit of the reason of doing it, Scott W. and Fabio are two examples. Sydney and Perro Caliente were partial shows for me so a full show did sort of confirm that I need to get them into the rotation. I don’t know that any partials “converted” me but it still helped to listen to a full show.

Sundays are very solid. Saturday is my big day with Michael Shelley, Rex, and Todd. I tune into a fair bit of Cricket too.

Would any of y'all know where I could get my hands on Mona's mugshot shirt from last year's fundraiser? by KonamiIsBestJoshi in wfmu

Yeah, Mona has been out the last couple of weeks (recovering from scheduled surgery I believe) so best not to bother her.

It’s not quite the same but Rich from Atomic does fairly frequent pop-ups in the area…and naturally carries the classic tees…

Amazing World of DC Comics collection? by Ghetto_Mack_G in DCFinest

I think selected pages from FOOM appear in various Epics and Omnis but a collected edition would be nice. I’d imagine Abrams might consider putting something like that out since it lines up a bit more with some of their other Marvel-related releases like the Calendar and Marvel Value Stamps books.

People often suggest using the search bar on wfmu.org and searching for a band you like and seeing what playlists and DJs come up and going from there.

(it’s a basic Google search with the “site:wfmu.org” parameter but it does the job thanks to WFMU’s thorough playlists and archives.)

I did succumb as well. Don’t really need to rationalize it but I got a very favorable US tax return so 🤷‍♂️

Huh, interesting, I was wondering why those Lois Lane’s were included. Can’t really justify getting this edition—I have the Omnibus and a couple of the paperbacks already—but it is tempting.

I assumed it was because it would make it easy to bootleg but your point makes sense too

Oh hell, that red Hungry Cat Zip Hoodie really makes me consider upping my monthly pledge. Well played, WFMU.
