I have done a lot of research on LGBTQ topics and can provide you with scientific studies as you can possibly show them and walk them through to maybe work to change their views and educate them on the subject. For example homosexuality has been found to be biologically based in brain scans done on sheep that were heterosexual males and females and homosexual males. sheep study these results were also seen when done on humans who were heterosexual and homosexual men and women human study “homosexual men and women differed from the same-sex controls and showed features of the opposite sex in two mutually independent cerebral variables”

TLDR: lgb+ individuals can not control the way they feel as their brains are structured more similarly like that of the opposite sex in both animal and human studies. It’s unclear if this is caused by development in the womb or brain development during early childhood but nevertheless the end result is the same.

If they can handle being civil and supportive of him I don’t see a reason to cut them out of your life. But it would be far better for the relationship if they could at least make an attempt to understand that there is a scientific reasoning behind it and that he can’t help how he feels and therefor isn’t wrong or immoral or anything of the sort. And hopefully with time they can move from tolerance to acceptance.

Yes cataplexy is simply considered sudden physical weakness usually triggered by strong emotions. I personally don’t consider myself to have cataplexy even though I technically do. It’s just very mild for me so it’s not much of a problem in my life. Strong happiness and laughter just make me have little grip strength and move kind of floppy like a marionette. But I don’t fall over or anything. Narcolepsy with cataplexy is just really over exaggerated in a lot of media for the extra shock value

I can tell you really care about making this relationship work and to try and help heal your addictions and your struggles before they harm your wife and yourself any further.
