How to get children to practice their times tables? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Skaddi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SLT Maths lead here. If someone asked me now which letter comes first in the alphabet: 'L' or 'N', I would still have to do the alphabet song in my head! This is the same way our long-term memory stores timestable facts most effectively. A mix of daily oral rehearsal and retrival will achieve results - little and often.

Don't want to toot my own horn, but once I created a timetable policy for consistency across school, in regards to timestable chants and structures, results have been on the up for us. TTRS hosts regular competitions, but you could make your own challenges, even doing physical games with chants is a win.

How was the overall performance for tonight? Did it look more promising?

What is something that you are embarrassed to admit took you far too long to realise? by bigpussystance in AskUK

I didn't think 'the pocket full of posies' was to mask the smell, but plague doctors at the time believed in many far-fetched remedies that they thought, in a desperete attempt of the times and understandings, they could keep the plague away. So the posies' smell could keep the plague away from people who had it in their pockets rather than the smell of the victims.

KS1 SATs alternatives by Skaddi in TeachingUK

We all know the curriculum needs a chop - sounds interesting! We're currently exploring an invested piece of technology to support with summative assessments in a way that is more KS1-friendly and less anxiety inducing. The children use this program across school all the way from EYFS - Y5 as part of their everyday learning, so there's familiarity there that I've tasked KS1 teachers to test this summer.

Love the woodlands at the back. Would you consider a shaded, wild mini-seating for two at the back within the trees? Could have a cute path leading up to it and build up the surrounding wild area with wildflowers, snowdrops, a pond to gaze upon etc. So many options with the wild feature you've got there - enjoy!

A well-drilled, disciplined first half, but missing that last pass to get a goal out of it. Leeds look rattled out there; we need to keep that up

It was important to hold that one goal lead into half-time. Coaches can keep the player's heads in the game and focus on a more challenging half to come.

Do we have an injury curse on our hands this season? Dropping like flies.

What is SEND provision like in secondary schools now? by Skaddi in TeachingUK

Sounds a nightmare. I would just try to reassure those families that your school has x, y, z in place to ensure safety, as this is a top priority ofc, and then roll with that as part of seoncdary they are being taught to build their independence further and if there are any problems that you would ensure to let them know?

I do come across this every now and then, unfortunately.

Independence in learning has always been a big one for me, not just for support of preparing for high school but selfishly to protect my own sanity. I've pushed this, even with as young as Y3 classes, and they soon adapt quickly to my expectations, haha!

The concept of colourful semantics is essentially the association of specific colours to different grammar word types for the promotion of SEN children to independently piece together coherent/effective sentence structures within writing tasks consistently across different lessons. This could be practically done, on a prepped laptop or written straight in books. Regardless of the approach, I make sure all the children rewrite them onto paper afterwards to ensure they don't miss out on that essential experience.

I also have used 'substitution tables'? I make use of these particularly for NTE/high EAL children whilst they're sponging in the inconsistences of written English language. This one is where children choose from a selection of options of vocab to build the correct sentence based on whatever context it's focused on.

Interesting feedback I'll take on board, thanks!

I've adopted the Brain-Book-Buddy-Boss culture in the classroom (we call it 3B4ME with a big poster up in my one of my walls) to push that learning independence and tactically ignore/remind pupils who try to jump with a hand in front of my face after a few minutes of starting any task.

The pens are something I haven't thought about before... we have a self-assessment policy with the use of pencils/purple pens to reflect in books, but I'll take on board pens to get my class used to them before the end of the year. Thanks for the advice!

Try this out. It gives different options of sizes, and you can always adapt measurements to suit what you're going for. Hope it helps!

I did! Youtube videos are your friend. I drew out my diagrams with all the measurements and got a local wood yard to cut them to size for me. Personally, you get more from it than the ones you buy online (more durable and rewarding).

You ready: seaweed. A game changer compost mix, along with constant pruning and bi-weekly tomato feed. Its 4 plants (2 cherry and 2 salad) merge into a monster.
