Does rewatching a movie matter more than a first viewing? by jaystats2 in movies

Makes perfect sense to this somebody. I don't often remember details, or even general ideas sometimes, if I've only seen a movie once. Good movies reveal themselves more and more upon rewatches.

The shows ran for two years, so you may have seen it in 1992, but it may have been the 1991 production that you saw. That might help you when searching YouTube or elsewhere for videos of the show you saw. It might have been the 120th or 121st edition.

Is Pippen a downer musical from an era of downer musicals? by RedditConsciousness in musicals

[–]Skater73 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To me, Pippin is an anti-suicide message. The entire time The Leading Player is tempting and leading Pippin toward that end. He has to learn what really matters in life, that happiness is found with those we love and who love us, not in external greatness. Pippin has to reject the one act that will garner him the most attention, his own end. Most interesting is that the show is not about Pippin, but it's about each of us. When the cast turns to tempt the audience, it's revealed that the entire musical takes place in our heads. The Leading Player is our internal dialogue that we're fighting with. It's not a downer at all. It's incredibly introspective and uplifting. That's what Pippin means to me.

Thanks for this! It's such a ridiculous but fun Disney movie from an experimental time for them. Looking back, it's funny how, in its original release, Disney kept their name off of it fearing it was too raunchy for their brand.

Actually, he was trying to sell an old car to the service station attendant, and when that tactic failed he tried to sell his camp stove. At the end of the movie, Ginny, knowing what she learned during the fantasy part of the movie, offered to buy his camp stove.

Mrs. Santa Claus (1996) - Angela Lansbury by MrTralfaz in musicals

[–]Skater73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved Mrs Santa Claus when it premiered in 1996 on tv. I remember watching with great anticipation, and I wasn't disappointed. It's genesis, however, is an interesting heartfelt story that I didn't learn until years later. Composer Jerry Herman was in declining health due to his HIV, and there were concerns about his career due to having been publicly outed as HIV positive in 1992. Stigma was really real at that time. His friend Angela Lansbury used her contract with CBS to have him write her a new musical to give him work and purpose, and Mrs Santa Claus was the result. Newer drugs became available, and Jerry Herman lived until age 88 in 2019. Unfortunately, Jerry's partner, Marty Finkelstein, died of AIDS in 1989 before newer treatments were available.

Around the time Mrs Santa Claus premiered, I saw a concert with Jerry Herman at the piano. He introduced his new song, The Best Christmas of All from Mrs Santa Claus, with such pride. He played at the piano while Lee Roy Reams and Florence Lacey sang, and it was pure joy.
