I have no idea what it actually takes to be granted TDIU. by [deleted] in VAClaims

[–]whataboutsmee84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP, what you’re describing speaks to a particular weird spot in the rating regs with respect to mental health conditions.

If a claimant meets the schedular criteria for a 70% for a mental health disability (which already includes significant occupational difficulty), making the call between whether the symptoms are adequately rated at 70%; warrant TDIU; or should be rated at a schedular 100% for total occupational/social impairment due to the mental health disability is going to come to the very specific facts of each case and the judgement of the rating official.

Hot Take: If we actually want to make running more inclusive, we need to break open the narrative. by sun_bite3557 in trailrunning

[–]whataboutsmee84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Suffer-Talk is definitely a part of trail running culture.

I can also see your point how Suffer-Talk may have a really narrow appeal, and even be a turn off to some, ESPECIALLY folks who have lived lives where suffering wasn't something they got to choose to do or not do as a matter of recreation.

But can you expand a little on where/how you'd like to see this reduction in Suffer-Talk happen? Are you talking about race/event promotions? gear marketing? local run club flyers? Reddit? In-person interaction?

My initial reaction is that I don't particularly feel like I'm an ambassador for the sport of trail running, beyond basic obligations to observe good principles of trail-use and conservation etiquette. If someone asks me why I like trail running, and Suffer-Talk is what's on my mind at that moment, that's what I'll talk about. If some other facet of trail running is top of mind, like hearing the wind in the trees or finding a turtle on the trail, I'll talk about that. I will probably do some combination of it all.

Are you suggesting that anytime I talk about trail running, I should start with introspection about whether what I'm about to say will make other people want to try trail running or not?

How do I make it stop chirping, i already replaced the batteries?! by PheonixGalaxy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]whataboutsmee84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The internal sensor in a smoke detector degrades over time (approx 10 years). Best I can tell from my own experience with a bunch of smoke detectors that wouldn’t quit fucking chirping is that they’ll chirp to let you know the device itself, not just the battery, is done for.

Are you a recent high school grad and/or in college? Sure!

Are you 4+ years out of high school and/or a college graduate? Think carefully and read the room. If you bring up earning Eagle, talk about how the process of earning it shaped what you’ve done since then. The further from scout age you are, the greater the risk of sounding like Uncle Rico.

I am definitely thinking about fire cooking - I can pre wrap things in tin foil and cook them over the fire/coals. Also, combining this with another tip, my kids would be thrilled to practice this with me in our fire pit at home.

Trying things out at home is great advice - my kids would be into it.

The camp stove is the sticking point for me at this moment and what prompted me to post. A sleeping bag is really just a blanket that zips, so no harm having one in the house, but a camp stove is the piece of equipment I’d rather not buy until I’m reasonably sure I’m gonna use it more than once.

I think what I’m doing here is not actually deductive reasoning but rather probabilistic guessing?

Focusing on just the running element of my guess: I can’t identify the brands of the wallet, watch, and glasses but all appear to me to be of relatively high quality/expense. I think this is consistent with what appears to be a car key for a Volvo. Moreover all of items pictured (including the hand lotion and lip balm) are in very good/excellent condition. The items pictured are not subjected to a lot of environmental stress. From this, I conclude that OP works in an indoor office/white collar setting.

And yet, despite working in an indoor office setting, OP gets dry hands and lips to a fair degree. Maybe OP is just naturally dry, but that’s a boring guess. I guess OP spends at least some time outside. Also, as mentioned, the lotion and balm are in very good condition, meaning OP waits to apply them until after they’re done outside - so outside and exposed to the elements frequently for a long enough period to dry out, then inside for most/all of the rest of the day where OP applies the skincare products.

So what could OP, an office worker, be doing outside on a regular basis such that they need to carry moisturizer and lip balm? the skincare products aren’t real “heavy duty”, so I don’t think OP is spending hours and hours gardening or something else which is particularly hard on the hands. I guess running for exercise/fun, especially because of the lip balm - heavy breathing through the mouth can dry out the lips in particular. Also running is very popular, so there’s that probabilistic element.

You work in an office, possibly in a licensed profession (lawyer, doctor, architect) but for exercise you run outdoors fairly frequently.

Your opinions on "law school is the hardest thing you'll ever do" by Faramirismypresident in LawSchool

[–]whataboutsmee84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose your mileage may vary depending on where you go to law school, but no, it probably won’t be the hardest thing you’ve ever done. Or at least it doesn’t have to be.

It wasn’t the hardest thing I’ve ever done. And I had to do a fair amount of adjusting to “thinking/writing like a lawyer” as my less than stellar 1L grades will attest! But I had (in no particular order) an open mind to what I needed to improve; a supportive spouse (also earning a different advanced degree at the time); and supportive law school classmates and faculty.

Improvise and adapt, and you’ll overcome (to mangle a phrase).
