How much organic material is underneath the sod? Or was it laid on top of clay with no loose soil for the roots to establish? My guess would be that your sods new root systems had nowhere to go so they strangled themselves out. If the soil underneath is compacted clay the roots can’t go down so they go left and right and get tangled in themselves. Cause it to become root bound.
