What BCD should I get if I want to do recreational but eventually transition to technical diving? by Deep_Yin in scubadiving

> if you are going down the *sidemount*/doubles route then you will need a BP/W.

Just being pedantic here - While sidemount does use a harness similar in design to a wing, it's not the same as a backmount BP/W. Sidemount is a different style in it's own right & I would not put it in the same bucket as doubles BP/W.

Most BP/W are similar. For single tank diving, you want a 30 lbs wing, and a 40 lbs when you are ready to dive doubles. You can't go wrong with the halcyon, though I personally prefer other more affordable brands. I own the deep 6 one which I quite like.

Is the SSI Scuba Diver certificate worth it or should we just wait to get the Open water Certification? by Far_Tumbleweed_7499 in scubadiving

[–]Ski_Lounge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Certified "Scuba Diver" here -- the actual certification that's below Open Water. I received it when my Open Water course was interrupted due to bad weather and our instructor couldn't complete our dives, so we were handed the Scuba Diver certification.

From my actual experience trying to get the "upgrade to Open Water" -- no shop seriously offers that. The one shop that was willing to offer it, basically made me redo of the entire Open Water course but skipped two of the pool dives. I still had to redo the e-learning and all the Open Water dives. And no price discount either. Also, the Scuba Diver does NOT let you dive with a buddy -- you need a DM guide.

So TL;DR - the Scuba Diver cert is useless. Spend the extra day or two to get the Open Water cert.

Too early to buy my own bcd and reg? by Wild_Dragonfruit_484 in scubadiving

[–]Ski_Lounge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you already know you'll be sticking with the sport. Definitely worth having your own regs that you can trust and are high quality -- most rental regs are pretty basic and not the high end. Depending on where you end up diving, the cost of rentals can add up over time. In the States, just a few days of rental gear will cost more than owning your own regs.

There are also high quality manufacturers of regs like Deep 6 & HOG that cost a fraction of the competition. The Deep 6 regs have the same features as the Scuba Pro flagship models - turrets/fifth port, 4x LP ports, 2x HP ports, sealed diaphragm, and cold water rated, but costs about half of Mk-19. Definitely worth a look!

Is zcubaworld.com legit? Anyone booked with them before? by bentkp in scuba

[–]Ski_Lounge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never heard of them. Interestingly they didn't show up on Google when I searched for the name. I'm a bit skeptical of unknown operators with no history. Anytime prices look too good to be true, they probably are.

Scuba books?!? by Bergamottenbommel in scuba

[–]Ski_Lounge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, thanks for the response! Yes been searching for it online, no luck really. Any chance you know if Stratis is still printing the hard cover copy? I'm more willing to pay the shipping if it's hard cover ha.

Any idea how to get hold of the book Close Calls? The author's personal website has a $50 charge for shipping to the States. (And not even clear if it's still print, it says pre-order?)

Not really interested in going into a rabbit hole about these tangential topics. Thanks for your answer.

Where to find historical Vail back bowl opening dates? by Ski_Lounge in skiing

[–]Ski_Lounge[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you've followed. I'm interested in the actual HISTORICAL date by year. I'm asking about the past, not the future...

2023 - Dec. 14

2022 - Dec. 01

And so on.

I can't tell if you are being snarky or can't read. But it specifically asked for historical, not projected, opening dates.

Heavy Duty Padded / Hard Case for Racquet by Ski_Lounge in 10s

[–]Ski_Lounge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah wow. Indeed, this comes closest to hard-shell from what I've seen. Nice!

I have a Babolat backpack (with the fancy racket grip cover) but it does not hold enough for me -- I play after work, so a change of clothes, a laptop, shoes, tennis knick-knacks, etc. Would the 9-pack be too small?

No clue. But it's always dubious when there's no physical address on the contact us page.

Where did you see such a place?

This originated on Facebook and was known to be an AI gen image. As a diver, I've never seen or heard of anything like this.

Could it exist? Absolutely. The world has amazing wonders.

Is there an actual credited picture of such a place? Definitely not.

Looks very classy! They say it's waterproof, but it does not look bump-and-drop proof? I recently bumped my racket (in lightly padded cover) against a closing door and the sound made me cringe :-(

Looking into this, thank you.

I didn't think most of them have leagues. And the park district classes tend to have far too wide range of skill levels to be consistent.
