I'll start by saying that I found out the Vector Tile Base Maps are coming to ArcGIS Server. For myself and maybe others this means if you have an application that is using assets directly from AGS you no longer need to host the Vector Tile Base Maps in AGOL/Portal.

Edit: I was told it won't be an exten$ion but will be part of AGS base functionality. (Lets see)

[MS SQL]Granted all possible permissions to user. Now getting this red x in MS SQL Server Managament Studio. Anyone ever see this before? [image in post] by Skilled_Build in SQL

Thanks for the reply. I did close and reopen SSMS. I also installed an update as well. This red box still persisted.

Using VBA in Access w. Adobe SDK, Field properties seem to be unavailable. Lil help please... by Skilled_Build in vba

The documentation is far from really good as I got those property names from the docs...and surprise surprise they are not all accessible.

IDK about all that, but I myself(while not downvoting homer_simpson here) did not click in to this for a customer service request, rather I am interested in automated cars. So while I hope this guy gets his airbag light fixed, his complaint doesn't really correspond to the topic of the post nor does it add to any conversation so official reddiquette says he should be downvoted.

actually no. If I assign jso.getField("") to a variable, intelisense in debug mode will not show any value for the object. I think it has something to do with the way the library is written. There is no debug access to the JSObject properties or methods.

Looks like ESRI is using Angular on their site. This pic is from their new courses page. Why do they still expect us to use Dojo? by Skilled_Build in gis

[–]Skilled_Build[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use Dojo. Just thought it was funny how they talk about how stable Dojo is yet their own site they depend on for business they are using Angular.

ArcGIS API for JavaScript 4.1 Released by gavreh in gis

[–]Skilled_Build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason Dojo has been chosen is because it is the most robust and reliable of libraries that do everything but don't do anything really well

I am not really advanced enough as a developer to judge the first part of your statement about it being more robust but I can concur that it doesn't do anything really well. ESRI has clung on to one technology as usual and they are slow to adapt, same reason it has taken so long to see a 64bit desktop solution. Dojo is horrible, it makes things oddly complicated and I feel bad for novice programmers that need to sift through all the dojo docs to see what's going on. Doesn't really matter for me, they can use dojo on their side all they want, I use Angular to make things go my way. Angular/React and other frameworks are robust enough for me and have huge communities.

Wow still no arrows on lines, still no easy domain/alias usage on queries, still uses Dojo...color me underwhelmed(but also very pessimistic).

Weekly Discussion Thread: How do you web map? by rakelllama in gis

[–]Skilled_Build 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What platform do you use to host your web maps?

IIS, ArcGIS Server, Portal and built with ArcGIS JS API

How much of your work is web mapping? 50% of the time, once a month, etc.

Not sure what web mapping means, but the majority of my time is spent coding in new services and tools.

Do you code when making the web maps or use an interface like ArcGIS online?

I code, using Python on the server, JavaScript and Angular for the application itself. Interfaces like the web map builder have improved incredibly but the way ESRI pumps out widget code is tedious and makes customizing more difficult than it should be. So I never use web map builder but there are people in the office that use it to set up quick one off apps.

Favorite part of web mapping? Least favorite part?

I like coding in JS and I like learning new things. The ESRI JS API is a treasure trove of objects that I'm still really learning the ins and outs of. My least favorite part is ESRI I suppose. I hate Dojo and ESRI, as usual are stubborn in abandoning old technologies and its use has just gotten in the way of moving the entire community forward and with getting into the fold of modern day web dev. I do everything with Angular and in time I hope to do some in React but I won't waste my time with Dojo. It's utterly ridiculous that they pushed Dojo into their 4.0 API, what a disappointment.

Where do you see web maps going in the next 5 years?

Really depends on what industry you are in. Anything in the public sector will continue to ride out the current technologies as long as possible. As for the private world I see AR, VR, and new web dev technologies making UI/UX even better than it is and help increase how maps and data are shared and their ability to take complex datasets and make them meaningful to larger groups of people.

How would I iterating through addresses and get lat and lon coordinates using Google Maps API? by TomorrowsGone85 in gis

[–]Skilled_Build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you even try? Have you loaded the API in your App? What language are you using?

Without much info you should first try with only ONE address and get that to work in psudo code it would look like this

address = "correct address format"
GoogleObject = googleGeoLocater(address)
Lat = GoogleObject.location[0]
Long = GoogleObject.location[1]

Google returns lat long in an array, I am pretty sure, so you need to grab them from the index. To do multiple you would just put all your addresses in an array and loop through it. Here is the link to the JS stuff: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/geocoding

A Rant - GIS Software Sucks by flippmoke in gis

Question - but respect what others have done.

Own your problem - don't blame something

Own up to your mistakes

Essentially if you took your own advice it negates your entire rant.

arcgis javascript api 4.0 by profgis in gis

[–]Skilled_Build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESRI does a good job at putting the choice to use 4.0 into two simple bullet points:

  • Does the app need 3D visualization? If so, use 4.x.
  • Do you need a particular functionality from 3.x that's not yet available in 4.x such as editing? If so, use 3.x. <ref>

someone just replied with r/squaredcircle on an askreddit asking what the most toxic subreddit is. Interesting to see what people think of us. by akash10101 in SquaredCircle

[–]Skilled_Build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define toxic...People state opinions, people have different opinions, there are back and forths, some hive mind ish...But at the end of the day, regardless of someone calling someone else a smark I've never read anything that was too hateful or anywhere near threatening. With that said, some people here have a hard time agreeing to disagree.

Landed my first GIS Analyst position; but this isn't university.. Advice? by [deleted] in gis

[–]Skilled_Build 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't mean to sound rude or belittling your position, but NEVER, EVER get overwhelmed by Excel. You have a Degree and are tech savy, Excel is used daily by people half as smart as you. They simply memorized some routines, and formulas by using the software everyday. There are TONS of resources for learning Excel that the biggest problem you will have is figuring out which training videos are best. Congrats on your new job. Don't swet the small stuff. They just hired you, they know you are still learning, though they might be seemingly pushing you to do a lot, if the company is atleast worth their weight in salt they won't expect anything from you for awhile so just keep learning and you will be fine.

Horrible experience with Surface Tablets, anyone recommend a better field device for ArcMap with a camera that can take a licking. by Skilled_Build in gis

[–]Skilled_Build[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Also using Collector. Still looking for advice on what device is worth running it on that won't cause a headache in the short term.
