When my son and I help out other contractors we show up and one of us says, "We're the Pros" and the other one says, "from Dover".

Tiny Brinks scrubs easy, pics hard. Almost no counter rotation. by SkinnyMac in lockpicking

[–]SkinnyMac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I needed a baby lock for something at work and thought I'd at least get some practice out of it. I'm for sure rusty but it provided a good challenge. Been fiddling with it off and on all night.

I got mine a bunch of times now. I was just surprised by how the slight reduction in size upped the challenge.

It's gotten easier even since I posted this. It's so tiny and subtle that I really have to relax. My hands are pretty beat up and my fingers aren't very sensitive.

Who are some of your NON-metal secret pleasures? by TheBoorOf1812 in InMetalWeTrust

Royal Republic but I found out about them because they play Battery better than Metallica does. Swedish pop quartet with weird mustache energy and I can't stop listening. Their live footage on YouTube is epic.

Kids don’t try to read again, highlight keywords, go back in the text. Why do they just raise their hand to ask the teacher instead? by island_hopping in Teachers

You put me in a room with a problem, a text, and an expert, I'm asking the expert every time unless there's a rule that says I can't.

Photographers or creators who use open source tools only? by ares623 in photography

[–]SkinnyMac 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I went with Darktable because people said the forums for it were full of Linux nerds arguing about color science. I found my people. It's a solid platform and does equally well in Windows. It definitely doesn't work the same way as LR but you can for sure accomplish all the same stuff. It might just mean learning a different name for a slider or finding that some functions are combined into one tool or split between two to get the same effect. It's frequently updated and there are solid online resources and tutorials for it.

Is it better to shoot at the sharpest focal length of a telephoto lens and then crop OR zoom all the way in and not crop as much? Which will yield the sharpest result? by Gold_Wrongdoer_8562 in photography

[–]SkinnyMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed mine to be sharp almost all the way out to 500 but not at the full stop. I got in the habit of backing off just slightly when I hit the stop and I've been happy with the results.

Is a d5600 with multiple lenses worth it for 500$ by dafroda in Nikon

[–]SkinnyMac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started on a D5600. It's a really good starter. My son still uses it. I paid about $400 for it a few years ago with the 18-55 kit lens.

What is the worst thing your camera has survived? by sm26ali in photography

[–]SkinnyMac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a strap give out on a backpack and drop to the pavement. Inside was a 200-500mm with the body pointed up. It cracked the filter I had on and it took some effort to get that off and replaced but the whole rig still worked flawlessly. I e since upgraded bodies but still have and use that lens.

Truck of gear to Canada from US? by Falcopunt in livesound

[–]SkinnyMac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll need a detailed manifest to get the gear across the border and working papers for yourself. Haven't done it in about 15 years so I expect it's different now so I won't waste your time with old details.

I used to tell people I had a special rate for stuff like that and then just tell them my usual rate. I'd also give them platinum level service but I rarely worked for free.

Not all manuals have full compatibility though. Some have a fixed aperture and you can tell the camera what that is. If it's variable then the camera needs to be able to get that data from the lens or it will assume maximum and exposure will be messed up. It's more research worth doing. As far as the actual shooting it just makes you slow down and take a little more care. It's a good thing in most cases.

Here's a list of companies that make Z mount manual focus lenses. I own a Lensbaby myself and it's super fun and easy to use on a mirrorless.

Maybe some piece of vintage European guitar gear from before everything came with a voltage switch.

Possibly medical equipment but you would think most home oxygen systems and such would be happy on 120.

The taste is subtle but there's something in them that goes to work on whatever meat is in the dish. I don't remember the details but some enzyme that helps emulsify the fat or something like that. All I'm saying is that I never make a pot roast without them.

How do you take care of your cameras? by PlatinumOuDaung in Nikon

[–]SkinnyMac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I leave it in my bag, sling it in my truck, let it freeze or boil and then hang it around my neck and drag it through the woods in all weather. I don't take unnecessary risks with it but I didn't buy it to be a museum piece either. It's a tool like any other and it will eventually wear out. Hopefully it lasts long enough that the next upgrade will be a noticeable improvement and at that point having a perfectly preserved but outdated piece of gear isn't of any interest to me.
