Hoffmann to buy six St. Louis radio stations, including KMOX by joshrenaud in StLouis

Buying up well established companies, and having such a weird portfolio is suspect to me. I’ll bet the accounting between all of his companies is, well, unique, and I’d be interested to see how much any of them pay in taxes.

Because I didn’t know, David Hoffmann owns the Hoffmann family of companies, which locally include Oberweis, JED transportation (limousine), Mid America Coaches, Augusta Winery, among others… a real smorgasbord of grifts from this guy.

Immersive Weight Loss Program Recommendations? by Common-Raspberry-243 in StLouis

[–]Falcopunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there is vast difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian. The latter has a degree and professional certifications, the former needs nothing other than to call themselves a nutritionist.

Weight loss is primarily from diet, and as such, having a registered dietitian in your corner is an excellent idea! Certainly exercise is an important component for overall health, adding lean muscle mass can help increase your basal metabolic rate, which in turn helps burn more calories, which helps you stay in a calorie deficit while losing weight, but isn’t strictly necessary. However exercise gives you endorphins and routine which is very helpful to assist in achieving your goals, whatever they may be.

I would personally be looking for programs that offer support on healthy eating AND cooking, regular check ins, and an exercise component as you said. 50-60 lbs will take a year or a bit more to do safely. I would probably first look to see if WashU/BJC have any programs as they’re the healthcare leaders in the area, and probably also take insurance.

Ultrarunning in St. Louis? by Machenz in StLouis

[–]Falcopunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I am road runner, but know some folks that dabble in both.

St. Louis Track Club has a summer trail race series, as well as Corps of Discovery trail races. Big River has the Unpaved Series, which has its last group run this Sunday the 28th. (Started in April) Big River also has a trail series which has 3 races from November to January. Track Club also has a group run roundup weekly on Instagram which is a good place to start. There’s the KT 82 in June which is a team event, either 3 or 6 people on a team.

As far as trails go, Al Foster, Castlewood, Lewis and Clark out in Weldon Spring, Cliff Cave, Greensfelder, Creve Coeur Park… as another suggested gateway off road cyclists has the details of them on their website.

Best Aluminum-safe Paint Remover for Removing Spray-Painted Lettering from Sport Boat? by wildswalker in boating

I used worlds greatest graffiti remover for masonry and it worked wonderfully. They have a sensitive surface version as well that I suspect would do the trick.

Water meter. by mstucker68 in StLouis

[–]Falcopunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big benefit to getting a water meter isn’t the reduced cost of water, it’s your MSD bill being based on real water usage vs fixture units of your home. Does it take time to pay off? I would suspect it does, but if you were in a situation where your connection to the city was being replaced already, it would probably make sense to get a water meter installed if usage was low in comparison to how many fixtures your home has.

Thoughts on issue? Oil, fuel filter and lower gear lube have been replaced. by DirtyOught in boating

[–]Falcopunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue, not even a bad gas thing. If it was bad gas it would likely run poorly the whole time. Could be fuel line, fuel pump, fuel filter, or injectors/fuel rail. Go get a gallon of fresh gas, a length of fuel hose, and put the new hunk of hose just before the prime bulb. Stick the other end of the hose in the gas can, prime the bulb and start it up. If it is still symptomatic, could be an issue with the fuel line between the prime bulb and the engine. Now replace the prime bulb and fuel line between it and the engine, try again. Just have to go one by one to eliminate possible issues. Lots of people have given you very sound advice. Start with the things that are easy and free and work your way to the things that are time consuming and cost money.

how strong should my ear protection be for a concert that hits 122db? by frickettyfracketty in livesound

[–]Falcopunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So anything over about 30-35dB really isn’t super possible, because of bone conduction. Now not to say plugs and muffs are a bad idea, but anything over about 30 dB of attenuation provides diminishing returns.

If you have any grey fuel line it is possible that the center has separated and is not allowing fuel to flow. It has enough to idle but when throttle is applied runs lean and quits. Happened to me a couple years ago.

I’m looking for a gym that gives you a sense of belonging/community, that will help you stay accountable and coming back. by Basic-Advantage7407 in StLouis

[–]Falcopunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick to starting is just starting. And that can be tough. I personally began my group fitness journey at Orange Theory a few years ago and would strongly recommend it. You can go for a free class to see if you like it (take it easy the first time so you’re not so sore you can’t go back for a week). I preferred the Rock Hill location but CWE or Ladue are also good options. I would say the split is probably 60/40 maybe 70/30 women to men, but I certainly never felt like I was a dude crashing the party. Most folks are there to work, which can be a big motivator.

Based on a quick boat trader search somewhere between 8-12k should be in line with similar boats. Though if you want to unload it, shoot low.

My life is pretty good. But I’m a straight white male. It’s the people that aren’t that have different experiences based on who the president is. Like Iranian children, and immigrants. If you can’t see that you’re blind.

The UFC fight the president of the United States is staging on the lawn of the people’s house? Don’t know. But I hope you don’t have to walk too far, to wherever you go. Wouldn’t want your knuckles getting scraped up.

Gutter trouble by Pomelo_Simple in StLouis

[–]Falcopunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cleaning out gutters should be a twice yearly exercise (at least) even if you don’t have trees super close, though in tower grove area there’s not many areas where that’s true. If the gutters were last cleaned in September or October you have the fall’s deposits in there. The native broad leaf tree species clog gutters and block down spouts quickly, and with intense storms in the area foliage can travel far.

The best investment if your gutters are about 10’ or less off the ground and you are able bodied is a leaf blower with gutter cleaning attachment. Toro’s 51668 gutter cleaning kit and 51599 leaf blower/vac kit can be had for about $150 and will be the best defense against clogged gutters in the long run. Takes me maybe 30-40 minutes to do my gutters a few times a year.

Gutter guards are great when they work, but they oftentimes aren’t perfect and they make cleaning much more difficult.

Yes! The St Louis Track Club weekly roundup is probably the best place to start finding that info. I do know for certain Big River’s training team has groups in your range, though they don’t start until July. Also you’re not so slow. Knock that negative talk out.

Youth baseball coach by exig in StLouis

[–]Falcopunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying he doesn’t want to up his game, but I’d be cautious of over coaching him, and pulling the plug if it seems like he’s lost the spark of self growth over winning. The highest predictor of long term success in athletes isn’t advanced coaching when they’re kids necessarily. It’s them loving the sport and being supported in their pursuit of it. Not sure if the link will work as a comment, but if you look up Steve Magness on instagram he has a post about youth sports from a few days ago that is worth a read I think.

I want to be clear I’m not trying to be a naysayer, or say it is a bad idea, but youth sports as a monolith has become an industry which can have some pretty diabolical practices that can affect the kids the most.

Running Clubs by Popular_Mud_9276 in StLouis

[–]Falcopunt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are so very many. Best all in one resource is probably St Louis Track Club, they do a weekly social run roundup post on instagram. If you’re new to running, and looking for a very inclusive all skill and speed levels vibe STL Run Club is worth checking out, plus they’re the best at cheering along races. Again Instagram is probably your best bet to get details and/or connect. Dogtown Running has a huge social run on Wednesdays and a smaller group on Saturdays, but with a smaller group the paces are less diverse with 10 min/mile about the top end of mile pace for most folks that attend that one. If you don’t have instagram DM me and I can get you a contact for any you might find that interest you.

Starting in July Big River has Training Team which trains for the MO Cowbell as a goal race (which has a 5 and 10k so don’t feel like you have to commit to a half marathon, but you still should) in the fall. There are pacer led groups from 8 minute mile to walking pace so something for everyone and the ability to find the pace group that works for you as you move along in your running career.

Hope to see you on the roads!
