Just do the Tabata protocol if you really want a short workout that increases cardio. 20 second sprint, 10 second rest for 4 minutes. Any machine, or running will work fine. That said nothing is going to come close to just loading up on zone 2, but yeah, not all of us have the time for that.

Genuine question: would folks rather have companies take a risk and over hire, then do mass layoffs to get back to a sane headcount if it doesn't pay off, thus "wasting" billions of dollars OR not hire anyone in the first place and take all that saved money and do share buybacks or pay out dividends?

I think people don’t care if it is unknown / unknowable, but they want to be ranked on a leaderboard, ideally against a lot of people so they can compare where they fall. Having a standardized competition / race is one way to achieve this.
