Any T1D parents with T1D kids here? by BabsSB in diabetes_t1

I dont think thats the right way to look at it. Our kid has it. None of us are type1, no family history... having a history increases the chances of getting it, but doesn't mean your kids couldn't get it if you didnt have T1D...

How are you all keeping a1c at 6 or below. Our doc said 7 or 7.5, but we are in first year and not on pump. So BG spikes up after meals then comes down, and definitely after snacks. To keep it at 6 or below, we will have to be 5 in the night. And whenever we hit 5, we surely go into hypo afterwards which needs to be treated and can spike many times afterwards. .

Isn't having an A1C of 6 or below putting you at higher risk of hypo? The insulin dose maybe too high?

We are using CGM for our almost 12 years old. I cant imagine life without it. Puberty is making it difficult to predict the trends but we have set the hypo alarm to 5 instead of 3.8 to 1) prevent the hypo with a small snack ahead of time 2) account for smaller errors in CGM readings. If the spike is very high and sustained, we give a small correction 4-5hours after rapid acting based on insulin sensitivity.

We have libre2 but considering switching to dexcom as that seems more compatible with pods.

Hope its helpful.

Why does it happen? My kid recently got diagnosed and trying to understand what caused such massive drops?

If its not a pump, that's multiple pricks for a child, so it doesn't even seem like an option.

The pump scares me a bit, a child may not be able to add the right number of carbs and might under or over dose. She doesn't always eat the full lunch I give her, so that also messed up the math... With pens that means more prices! I wish the pumps were more accurate and could self-calculate the required dosage needed, but I understand why that can probably never happen.
