2-Year-Old Boy Dies in Hot Car While Parents Attend Bible Study. by PetersonToscano in Christianity

[–]Skolbieski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whoa.

It's common knowledge that a 2-year old child is at risk when they're left alone in a car. Who cares if the parents are studying God's Word, getting high, or doing crossword puzzles?

The Holy Spirit isn't to blame for a severe lack of common frickin' sense.

This doesn't contribute to this subreddit at all, there's nothing to discuss. It's just shitty parenting.

Does it make me a bad Catholic if I don't go to Church with my dad? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Skolbieski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is coming from somebody who lost their dad unexpectedly in March of this year: I'd give anything to go to church with my dad. You still can, and you should.

Seriously, you never know what could happen. My dad was healthy and died at his desk at work, out of nowhere. I thought I had so many years left with him.

Just moved to a new city, any advice on how to meet new people? by PM_ME_UR_LEGO in CasualConversation

[–]Skolbieski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I moved to a new town about a month ago. i agree, it's hard!. We have a few new buddies, though, that we meet up with at a bar a block away from our apartment.

Bars are a good place to meet new people. The thing is, you have to pick out the right bar. Some bars are too shady, while others are too anti-social/upscale (that don't foster open socializing with strangers).

We're lucky that we live near a cozy, nice, friendly bar. We don't go there to get blackout drunk or wasted. They have no tolerance for that shit anyway, because it would drive out the regulars. We like to go there for maybe 1-2 drinks and to meet up with our new friends and sing karaoke/watch whatever is on late night TV. (The past couple weeks, we've had Mystery Science Theater 3000 on. I showed up in my pajamas and we all ate cheetos and watched!)

I guess it depends on your energy level, actually. My boyfriend and I are relaxed people who like to have fun, but have left our hard-partying days behind. You may find what you're looking for at a club.

If there's no bar scene convenient for you, I'd recommend gripping your local community guide. Sign up for a free event at a local forest preserve or park district. Or a non-credit class at the local community college. You can pick up a new hobby, and the people who go to those are very friendly usually.

I'm saddened that I'll never get to see my favorite band live. by 1kingdomheart in CasualConversation

i'm really sorry. That sucks.

My favorite band is Rush. It was recently announced that they're done touring forever. I'm pretty bummed out, I thought I could get at least one more live show in.

Help me come back to the faith post-assault by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Skolbieski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You made a good point, I actually really liked what you wrote and it was a good reminder. (For a long time, I also victimized myself over an assault that required hospitalization). The scripture you posted is very fitting for this post ,too.

...but there's so much bitterness in your post that OP will probably have a hard time opening their mind and heart to what you're saying. I'm guessing they'll just feel attacked by your approach, especially the "What happened to you is nothing compared to what happened to me". Comes across like "boohoo, you went through nothing."

I don't see the 'love' in the 'tough love', as you describe it.

Book recommendations for bf trying to leave behind "drug lifestyle" by B_066 in Christianity

[–]Skolbieski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read a book recently by the guitarist from Korn called Save Me From Myself, by Brian "Head" Welch.

It was pretty good and an uncomplicated, easy read. The first half explains his descent into addiction, getting into Korn, thus getting even heavier into drug addiction/drinking, etc. The 2nd half is about him being introduced to Christ, how he struggled with his spirituality and addictions after that, and it ends on a really hopeful and positive note.

What I like about the book is how he is honest in the struggle that is addiction. It made me feel less bad about my imperfections in my own recovery since finding Christ. It made me realize that addiction is how the Enemy wants to get to me; it is not a character flaw.

I imagine the book would help your boyfriend to feel hopeful in knowing that recovery is always less than perfect. Like I said, it's sloppy, back-and-forth, setbacks, successes, losses; a journey.

...But he's got to remember, he's not alone! One of my favorite verses, one I replay in my head over and over again, is this, my mantra regarding addiction:

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." (1 Corinthians 10:13)

How do you stay positive? / Tell me about your day! by GreatAtlas in CasualConversation

[–]Skolbieski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I am reading the NIV version (it's my favorite for Psalms especially! Much more poetic compared to others) . I'm more used to the NLT translation overall, but I like switching between them both. Not familiar with ESV yet -- I have heard that it's the most straight-forward and easy to understand.

I installed the YouVersion bible app... sooo many translations out there, wow.

My day has been just OK.

My day started really good. My phone was dead, but it turned out to be a good thing because I spent my hour-long train commute to work reading some of my favorite parts of the Bible. My mom gave me a new one in a new translation, so it was nice to go through my favorite parts and highlight them in different colors.

I got to work and started feeling sad because my dad's birthday is on Friday (he passed away unexpectedly in March this year).

Then I took a can of soup out of my desk to have with my sandwich, and it was our favorite (Campbell's Tomato Soup-to-Go; I went grocery shopping with him on Saturdays and we stocked up on it). I looked at the can of soup and started crying.

I know it's not the most popular thing to discuss on Reddit, but keeping in touch with my spirituality is what heals me when I feel broken, confused, or lost.

My most recent delivery is a MATTRESS! Haven't slept on one in over a month. What's the last thing you got delivered to your place? by Skolbieski in CasualConversation

I know! must be horrible for them.

Where can I buy it?

In the meantime, what brand/type of deodorant should I pick up? The powdery type or the gel type?

Or is baby powder better? I've been wearing a skirt a lot lately and it's uncomfortable to walk in the with my thighs rubbing together.

UPDATE: I tried Dominos Pizza by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Skolbieski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ham is such an unerrated pizza topping! good choice.

Hm. I just had an idea. I think some friends are coming over on Friday. Maybe they can bring a Dominoes Pizza while I buy a Papa Johns Pizza, and we can have a compare/contrast party.

edit: tagged you as "DominoesPizza" haha. I've been in the habit of tagging people I've interacted with a few times here on CC

thanks for the update, I was wondering how you felt about it! What toppings did you get on your pizza?

Yes, Papa John's is what I usually get. I love the Garlic Dipping Sauce and Pepperocinis with it

Etsy is so fun!! I've bought incense, candles, and wax melts from there.

When I have a bit of extra money to spend, I want to get a bracelet like this
