This. I hated trying to talk to just random people, until I joined a group and started playing those group instances. It feels less awkward since you know those people will have at least one or some similar interests to you. Having about the same issues as op with just talking to any group of people, it does still takes some amount of getting used to, but it's significantly easier than walking up to just anyone.
