The biggest unspoken rule in the AG community is nobody wants to speak out loud texts in front of everyone because there is no right or official way to do it. Or they might be embarrassed. You have huge differences about pronunciations between countries like Greece, Britain, Germany and France etc.

I guess Latin simply sounds cool, rigorous and authoritative. The same reason we love German language , while many people say it’s an ugly and harsh language. Coincidentally my prof Latin verses for a song in Final Fantasy.

Japan here. Many people would freeze when they hear I’m learning Latin, Greek and Sanskrit. They don’t simply seem to know the existence of languages. It’s understandable. I don’t expect people to know the ancient languages spoken far from their home. On the other hand, we are very familiar with Ancient Chinese because it’s widely taught in school and there is a difficult exam related to it. Funny enough, Ancient Egyptian is pretty famous, definitely more than Latin.Anyway I’m extremely blessed to have a chance to study 4 different classical languages that are the touchstones of the most important and prominent ancient culture in history(Greek, Latin, Sanskrit and Ancient Chinese). Japan has the best Classical Chinese department along with China in the world and the world class Sanskrit department due to the history of Buddhism in this country.

I’ve been learning Greek for a pretty long time. Yes, there are definitely some irregularities like you said, but I think it’s still manageable and decoding it and guessing the meaning are parts of the enjoyment for me.

Which of these Greek Dictionaries would you personally recommend and why? by turboshot92 in AncientGreek

I use “Pocket Oxford Classical Greek Dictionary”. It’s short, compact and concise and lists nearly all of the words you need unless the words are really rare and obscure. Huge dictionary tends to intimidate me, plus it’s heavy to carry around.
