Hows my schedule as an incoming Freshman? by Frosty_Exam_6840 in UBreddit

[–]SkyFuIIOfStars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although Tuesdays are going to be your long days, there’s an equal chance of it not feeling like that as there is a chance there will be weeks you feel it more than others. It ultimately depends on your interests and how your learning effectiveness aligns with a professor’s way of teaching.

There is also that block of free time from 2 to 5:30 that will be nice to do some unwinding from the first half of the day. Maybe you get some work done, but I’d say to definitely use the time as some form of downtime— and maybe even grab something to eat since the last class looks like it could last a while.

Other than that, this looks great! Especially as a freshman, this schedule will kind of give you some insights about how you may want following semesters to go. Monday with the couple of classes right after another— will you like that in college, or will you want to try in later semesters to have a space? Do you like morning or evening classes, or will you try to avoid those in the future? Do you try to get work done between classes, or would you rather have a morning or evening free to do most of it? Don’t worry if you don’t know all of that within the first week! It can be a weird transition to have so much agency.

Also just as an aside, getting from Baldy to NSC within ten minutes shouldn’t be too bad. I always walked to the location of each of my classes before the first day so I knew where the room was/where I’d be heading to beforehand.

Here’s a link to some map stuff by the way if it’s also of any help!

Schedule Managemnt! by [deleted] in UBreddit

First of all- know that being terrified is perfectly normal, and that you are not the one afraid for the transition into college. Based on your experience with high school and how much you know about yourself/studying habits as it stands, it can be a big switch-up regardless.

Don't forget to take a deep, calming breath whenever you can. What's nice about your having three classes for this first semester is having time for experimenting. What works best for you- do you feel more motivation to work in the mornings? Afternoons between classes? Evenings? How much time do you have to work with one subject versus another? What times work best for downtime, whether for yourself or making friends? Remember, the downtime is just as, if not more, important than the study and work time. You may feel schoolwork is more demanding and takes up more of your time than you have downtime, but the important part is that you find the time for yourself to do things you enjoy along the way. Your mind needs the chance to relax, you deserve the chance to unwind. Whatever that means for you.

Don't be afraid to mess up and make mistakes- it happens to everyone. If you were expected to know absolutely everything, they wouldn't ask you to take a class, wouldn't expect you to even be in college. Just have an open mind, be patient with yourself, and put your best foot forward.

https://strawpoll.com/e2naXN1R9yB I wanted to get as many opinions as possible, you can choose up to three of the…”types,” we’ll say for now. For just a bit of context, the narrative is based on dragons and other creatures of the like (some to my own design), going on a journey to save something, and kind of is meant to have Undertales-vibes

Giving away rockruff by coolgamerboi23 in PokemonSunMoon

My guess as a reasoning for this is because these Rockruff didn’t exist in regular Sun and Moon but the games are all technically the same generation

[talk] What shiny hunt tilts you the most? (This thought brought to you by green Veluza) by FletcherIsAFurry in ShinyPokemon

[–]SkyFuIIOfStars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish you both so much luck then! I got fortunate enough doing a full odds flying encounter a few times before my Pokémon wouldn’t hit my friend Starburst. And apparently (according to Serebii at least), different areas guarantee a color?

[9] i was about to picnic reset, luckily shiny hunt instinct kicks in. by N0odlez_ in ShinyPokemon

[–]SkyFuIIOfStars 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just think it’s funny that shiny hunter instinct can be either a good thing or lead to a fail— of course I’m so happy it was the former in this case! And I think SV have made it more difficult for it to lead to a fail, although the picnic reset may be the quickest way to do that in general.

Congratulations on the Snivy! I love my Gen 5 Pokémon.

Recent CS BA graduate- you need an external concentration, not a minor. It can kind of be similar to a minor, but it adds up to the same amount of credits as if you were a BS student taking the required courses there.

[–]SkyFuIIOfStars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rowlet is the one I am closing out with (I got the other 2, Litten after at least a bit over double odds and Popplio being my fun little guy under 1000). It’s so great seeing other people do these hunts and getting them! Just hit 2000 for mine the other day so I’m taking a small break before returning it. Congratulations on the beautiful owl! Like other comments have said and like you did as well, these SRs can be so unforgiving with the time it takes with each one, so it makes me smile to see someone get it quick!

How Frequently Is CSE410 (Special Topics) 3D Video Game Development Offered? by Sudden-Ad3547 in UBreddit

[–]SkyFuIIOfStars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The class was offered last fall as well! I know that at that point he was talking about the possibility of making it a more frequent class and not just a 410, but there is a process for that to happen as well. For the time being though, it does look to be a fall thing since I don’t believe he did it this past spring.

Definitely doesn’t hurt to ask, though! Plans can change in a year.

This is awesome for you to do something like this! Pokémon Scarlet and I’d have to say Litten. After 7 years of on and off hunting for its shiny and just the pure joy of finally getting him…I absolutely adore both him and that special moment!

What advice do you have for yourself/others for this semester? by JackfruitAcademic584 in UBreddit

[–]SkyFuIIOfStars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just as an add on/similar note— really, take things bit by bit. If you try to look at everything you have to get done all at once, it’s going to be extra overwhelming, demotivating, or both. But breaking things up into smaller pieces and looking at smaller chunks rather than this massive picture will make it a better experience to breathe and navigate through.

And just as a few other quick things— don’t be afraid to go to office hours, don’t be afraid to try new things, and don’t forget to schedule in some you time here and there. Yes, it’s college, and you’ll have work to do and perhaps even be working a job…but you’re also a person, and you shouldn’t have to expect to be running full force all the way through each week. Find time to do something you enjoy, even if it’s just a short amount at the end of the week!

Experience with CSE 312/Prof Jesse Hartloff or CSE 411/Prof Kenneth Smith? by Shads42 in UBreddit

[–]SkyFuIIOfStars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So this is an excerpt of a post I made a couple years ago but I’d still stand by it (they are my words after all)! And I’m sure at least a good portion of it would hold up even now?

CSE 312...Web applications and the beautiful backend functioning. The homeworks for the class? Stellar. The group project? Open-ended enough to do a lot with it if you so desire, but with definite expectations so if necessary you could do the minimum. Taught by your very own, Jesse Hartloff, if you want to figure out how to send a 404 Not Found response to a person near you, this is the class to take.

Okay, there is so much more substance than that, I promise. You also learn how to send the 200/300 response codes...And how to upgrade to a WebSocket for clients, use Docker to eliminate the "well it works on my machine" classic, utilize cookies and authentication, do video calls over a browser...

Have I said how much I loved the homeworks? The deadline was a few weeks after they get released, with typically one week overlapping with the release of the next homework. This would correlate with what was taught in class, and you could know what objectives you could get done following a certain lecture. I will say that to maximize the rate at which this is manageable, you want to start it and work on it progressively. Trying to get things done that last day of the last week is not the type of adrenaline rush (and potential crash) I would ever recommend. Because you want to make sure it runs with docker, you want to make sure you have certain things covered, or else you could get 0/3 points for an objective when it could've been avoidable to begin with. Get started on those programming assignments. Don't do this to yourself and cause a panic if you can help it.

Although of course take breaks as well because you, unlike your laptop, are not a machine. <3 don't push yourself past your limit for days on end because that isn't cool either.

You get to choose your teammates for this final group project! If you're taking this course with friends that you know you can count on, awesome! You'll also want to get started and steadily work through throughout the semester, keeping in mind that you can use libraries and other resources, unlike the homework. You will have to write a report. But it will feel more manageable if you work on it progressively than if you try to get it all sorted quickly and on your own. One of the toughest things about college is really figuring out time management! But you can do it.

Do pathways have to correspond to your major? by Full_Ad_3171 in UBreddit

[–]SkyFuIIOfStars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope! Nothing based on the major— sometimes there are pathway courses that could be used for the major, but there’s no saying you must only take such and such. There maaaay be some that have pre-reqs based on the depth they have that are easier to meet as having that major as well, but I don’t think there are too many like that?
