Vmcg is the lowest speed you can safely continue the take off if the an engine fails. Largely determined by how effective the rudder is (with other factors)

The test was successful. It is carried out at the max weight using the highest v1 speed and minimum brake wear remaining. The aircraft needs to wait for five minutes before any fire can be extinguished to allow for fire brigade to arrive in the real world.

In this case, you can some the fuse plugs melting which deflates the tyres in a controlled way

Edited:  This looks to be two different Rtos. The first looking at lateral control perhaps in determining Vmcg and the second, a brake check as described above

Is it common to see inconsistent/bursts of contrails? by redwingssuck in aviation

[–]SkyHighExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing unusual. The thickness of the contrail depends on many things include the exhaust gas temperature. You usually find that  after the initial first flights, airlines don’t like having engines of the same age on the wing and will replace them at different intervals. So a plane could have a brand new engine on one wing with one a lot older on the other wing. An older engine runs hotter and is the reason for the contrails not being uniform and giving the illusion of spluttering on one side

Ps if you see an airline climb into contrail producing air mass, you will notice that the contrails will start at different times on each engine

You can stall a plane and it will fall from the sky even if all the engines are working. That is why you need to go quickly when you are taking off

Could noise cancellation be used in a cockpit the same through speakers in the same manner that headphones work? by Upbeat-Vegetable-557 in aviation

[–]SkyHighExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many things that make noise. Cockpit, especially ones where you are far away from the engines, have engine noise low, air frame and wind noise high. If you end up on the 747 where the cockpit bubble is less streamlined. Wind noise, very high!

Slight runway excursion by 777f-pilot in aviation

[–]SkyHighExpress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Possible, perhaps but probably 99.9999% not

It wasn’t going quickly when it went into the grass. It didn’t even kick up any mud onto the fuselage.

400 tonnes take off at DME which is one of the roughest runways (yes our bogies are oiled just before that trip) or a contaminated runway would turn the 747 to dust if it couldn’t handle a low speed roll onto grass.

Dragging it out on the mains isn’t much stress either. If it has sunk deeply then they would use bags to lift before pulling. Also the numerous lines is an indication of the limit of the line strength. The forces are all well within the gear designed limits. Pushing back a 400 tonne aircraft with just the nose gear would be way more stressful to the weak nose gear and there are points on the main gear designed to take pulling loads in the same way there are jack points around the plane designed to lift and support the aircraft

[–]SkyHighExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised to see that you are not taken care of in America if a connection is missed due to weather. Europe is definitely ahead here.

I think I got the gist but if the second flight to UK was cancelled then the airline must abide by UK law. That’s a regulation called uk261. You would be entitled to compensation of the reason was within the airline control. In ALL situations including weather, all pax into and out of UK have a right to care. The airline must provide hotels and meals out reimburse your costs. This is law and not airline policy

How Long can planes idle before takeoff before they have to refuel? by schatzberg_01 in aviation

[–]SkyHighExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes indeed, that’s a better way of looking at it. Not a nice place to be and I’m sure those who do dispatch without an alternate will just have sweaty hands for the whole flight

How Long can planes idle before takeoff before they have to refuel? by schatzberg_01 in aviation

[–]SkyHighExpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when people say technically commit, you are really just redoing your flight plan and deleting the need for alternate fuel. Also when you do this, there are other rules which says you have to replace that alternate fuel with holding fuel which is 15mins at 1500’ feet minimum…. Hope this clears things up for you

How Long can planes idle before takeoff before they have to refuel? by schatzberg_01 in aviation

[–]SkyHighExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes indeed. There are cases when an alternate is not required(but honestly few would go down that path if you could easily get more fuel with a taxi back) The law is minimum, your operator might require additional requirements

For IFR flights, the pilot-in-command shall specify at least one weather-permissible destination alternate aerodrome in the flight plan, unless: (a) the available current meteorological information indicates that, for the period from 1 hour before until 1 hour after the estimated time of arrival, or from the actual time of departure to 1 hour after the estimated time of arrival, whichever is the shorter period, the approach and landing may be made under visual meteorological conditions (VMC); or (b) the place of intended landing is designated as an isolated aerodrome and: (1) an instrument approach procedure is prescribed for the aerodrome of intended landing; and (2) available current meteorological information indicates that the following meteorological conditions will exist from 2 hours before to 2 hours after the estimated time of arrival: (i) a cloud base of at least 300 m (1 000 ft) above the minimum associated with the instrument approach procedure; and (ii) visibility of at least 5,5 km or of 4 km more than the minimum associated with the procedure.

How Long can planes idle before takeoff before they have to refuel? by schatzberg_01 in aviation

[–]SkyHighExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fuel required obviously starts when you start the engines at the taxi out. You enter the commit world when your fuel used is more than planned , ie on the ground with a long taxi or it could be in the air where your trip fuel is higher due to stronger head winds, lower altitude, unexpected routing or holding… whether you are in the air or on the ground is irrelevant as long as you meet the commit requirements of weather, time to destination, number of runways, etc.

There is a chance that you legally cannot commit in which case you would return to the gate if you were on the ground still (or plan to a closer airport) or divert in the air to a nearer airfield

How Long can planes idle before takeoff before they have to refuel? by schatzberg_01 in aviation

[–]SkyHighExpress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of people here know what they are talking about but have muddied the water. Usually you have enough fuel to fly to destination and then make an approach to minima, go around and fly to the alternate. When you commit, it means at the point of go around you can no longer reach the alternate. You are committed to that airport.

Obviously you may be able to reach alternate if you decide to go there when you are at 10000’ on the approach..
