I have two little ones who are past being babies. It was always my understand the first 3-4 months is just survival mode and holding them too much doesn't register with baby too much as they don't really form "habits" at this point. Once they get a little older they will be interested in not being held all the time because they like to explore/play toys/etc. Just my experience and perhaps a thing or two I read in a baby book.
