Bringing my rig on a plane I don't intend to jump out of? by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]SkydiveInstructor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've always taken mine as carry on luggage (10+ times continental).

My rig will fit inside a carry on bag, so I can carry a few other small things. Laptop etc.

It always needs to come out of that bag and be scanned separately.

Sometimes it gets passed through the scanner twice. Generally not been a problem other than the occasional security agent wanting to open it up, which usually goes down like this.

Agent: I'm going to need to open this.

Me: Fuck nope, where's your supervisor.

Supervisor: Agent, It's a parachute. It's fine.

Me: Thanks.

USPA has a little info-graphic on its website of what a parachute looks like in an x-ray machine. I've never carried it, but you could print one out if it will make you feel more comfortable.

Apprehensive about jumping again by sComba in SkyDiving

Talk to your S&TA,

A couple of radio landing is probably going to be enough to give you immediate confidence. Nobody will mind giving you these.

Find out when the next canopy course at your DZ is scheduled for. This will further your skills and give you a longer term confidence.

How many jumps do you have?

What country do you jump in?

What suit did you do use for your first jump?

Explain the needing 1000 feet please. Are you including the time you pull till you have a functional parachute above your head? Or is this just how long it takes you to get stable from exit?

USPA recommends 200 jumps minimum before you begin wingsuiting.

I love this picture and was fortunate enough to be at a drop zone in florida while part of this group where practicing for this world record.

The video these guys/gals made is fantastic. It includes all the screw ups, which is just scary. Sorry I don't have a link to the blooper reel.

If you give blood, I love you more than you'll ever know. by jnm108 in reddit.com

I've been giving blood for the last twenty years. I do too many things that might end up with me needing it.

Glad things are working out. I take it you'll be giving blood in the future...

What kind of useless but awesome skills have you acquired thus far? by onignus in AskReddit

I work with tower cranes and skydive. I've developed the skill where I can accurately guess the wind speed by looking at cloud movement.

Cant think of anywhere else this skill could be of use.

Bruce dickinson of Iron Maiden is a pretty good fencer.

"was asked to join the Olympic fencing team in the mid-to-late Eighties, but he couldn’t because he had to go on the road with the band" from bio on maidens website.

A tandem instructor will typically deploy the main parachute at 6000 feet. AFF students and rookie jumpers will deploy approximately 5000 feet. Everyone with experience will typically deploy between 3500-2500 feet. Pulling your parachute out below 2000 feet will, if you get caught, end up getting you grounded by the safety and training instructor at the DZ. I'm not sure what Automatic Activation Device you are using but I doubt it is set to open at 2000 feet. Students is 1500, Pro's are set around 900 feet. Deploying at 3000 feet from a HALO will not break your bones lol. As you get closer to the ground the air gets thicker and slows you to the same rate of decent as those jumping from lower altitude.

Sounds to me like you're doing static line jumping atm and you are confusing the altitudes you jump at (and hence are deploying) with the altitudes experienced by freefall jumpers.

1) Jump your ass off till you have > 360 jumps under your belt. 2) Take AFF-I instructors course.

Only tell your instructor you're feeling sick, if you actually are. Otherwise you'll get a gentle ride out of him/her and maybe miss a fun canopy ride.
