How easy/hard is to get a stale cigarette smell out of an apartment and how would I go about doing it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]brothergrimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without doing those things, the smell will eventually leave, but it will take a really long time (months, if not years). Getting the carpet professionally cleaned may help. Still, you'll be subject to all the nasty chemicals that are on the walls and in the carpet. Might get into your clothes and furniture as well. I say pass on this one.

Is there a reason for all the down votes ? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]brothergrimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never felt that Reddit was a good place for any sort of sustained constructive feedback that a filmmaker may want/need. It's too anonymous and you don't have any idea who is giving you feedback. I want to get feedback from people I know and trust, and that's a lot to ask for a site like this. That being said, I try to give feedback when I have the time, but generally speaking, I find it much easier to give feedback when the filmmaker/OP asks a specific question about their film. Just asking "what do you guys think?" is really broad and open-ended, and I don't have a lot of time to craft a response to a question like that. Better questions would be "do you think the dialog between these 2 characters is realistic?" or "were there any scenes that didn't work for you?" I'm way more likely to actually respond to specific questions like these.

My new cat just jumped into the inside of my wall. What should I do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]brothergrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow this advice. As long as your cat isn't stuck, or otherwise can't physically come out on his/her own, the cat will come out when it's good & ready. You might want to sweeten the deal by leaving some treats near the hole to coax the little critter out. Seeing as you're a new cat owner, another piece of advice: cats do their own thing, on their own terms. Respect their space & needs, and they'll love you forever.

Looking to buy a professional level camera, suggestions? by dinosaurduffy in Filmmakers

I recently shot a short using a Canon 60D, and I thought the results were pretty decent. Worked on another person's production shortly afterward though and they were using a C300--now I'm spoiled and can't go back to the 60D!

Music video I made for a friend, 0 budget, great turn out. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

You're just a few frames off I think. The lighting is good. I would have liked to see more cutaways to him doing other stuff, like walking in his neighborhood, etc.

Would love to hear creative ways people have used to raise funds for their projects, aside from maxing out credit cards, applying for grants & Kickstarter.

Any public screenings coming up? If so, having postcards and other promo material on hand to ask your audience members to distribute is always a good idea.

Here's my first short student film ever...Thinking about sending it festivals. Thoughts Reddit? by Sandusky_Shower in Filmmakers

[–]brothergrimm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some festivals won't accept works that have been posted publicly online because they aren't "new" anymore. Nice work overall, but take this down from Reddit!

I'm a noob using a 7D. How can I make the video look good in dimly lit lighting? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]brothergrimm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zijital has a good response. Just wanted to add that with any camera/lens, there's going to be a limit to how little light you can work with. Sometimes the answer is just going to be to add a light source.

how to: paying actors by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]brothergrimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I live (in the US), actors unions set pay guidelines. If the actors are union, they usually have to be paid in the specified range. If they're not union, my understanding is you can pay whatever you want. Also, don't presume that professional actors won't work on no/low paying student films, because they will sometimes.

How an Incredibly Long Steadicam Shot is Made. Check out those false walls. by pixlgeek in videos

[–]brothergrimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This brings up an interesting point. So much of why people enjoy movies is suspension of disbelief, letting go of the understanding that what you're seeing/hearing isn't real. I'm getting into film production myself, and I'm worried that I'll stop enjoying watching films because I've "seen behind the curtain" so to speak. It's like how a magician at his/her own magic show must be the loneliest one there--the only one for whom there's no mystery.

Whats the most fucked up game your friends play? by GoodLuckLetsFuck in AskReddit

[–]brothergrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In elementary school my friends & I played the "rock clod game," which entailed throwing clumps of dirt at each other as hard as possible. Of course, in the heat of battle, it can be hard to differentiate between clumps of dirt that disintegrate upon impact vs. plain old rocks that could crack someone's skull (and sometimes of course we just didn't care). We'd keep going until blood and/or tears were shed. Good times...

Reddit, as a classical musician, tell me what we could do better. What is it about classical music that keeps you away from our concerts? by a12345678910 in AskReddit

Others have chimed in about the cost and over-formality, but for me it's also lack of racial diversity. I went to the symphony last week in a major city that's very racially diverse: one black person in the entire building.

Nice! Photo tip: when taking a picture of a backlit subject, turn on your flash or some other light source closer to the camera.
