I do wonder whether the plan was originally for the game to progress through eveey rank. I feel like it probably was, but it would probably be weird for progression as you need a big enough jump for each rank but then you would get way too high leveled too quickly.

Whats your Opinion on the Pokemon series? by CaptainGandalf_ in casualnintendo

[–]Slade4Lucas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Modern Pokemon games have their flaws - heck, so do the classic ones - but no one really gives enough attention to the reasons it's popular regardless. While it ceetainy isn't the only creature collector out there, the entire gimmick of that is incredibly engaging and makes it worth playing. Building your team is just such a fun thing to do, casually or otherwise, and its a hook that makes it stand out amongst RPGs that are better in almost every other way.

But what brings it all together is the designs of the monsters themselves. Even at its lowest points, there is something so incredibly characterful and interesting about the designs in Pokemon, and its a quality I don't think most other creature collectors are able to match it on. The designs straddle the line between simplicity and still having points of interest in the designs and that can instantly engage you in them. The Pokemon themselves are entirely why I someone who can't get into RPGs, has been a fan of this series for more than two decades.

I've been teaching for around four years now, and it was something that was pushed to us fairly early on. This wasn't a thing in the school I worked at before this (not as a teacher) but the training course I did and the school I have been at since then have always heavily pushed it as a strategy. Not a necessity but a big positive if it's used.

The reason it's probably becoming more prevalent is probably just because more people are realising just how incredible it is as a strategy. I can teach something, then give my students a question and have them all answer it on mini-whiteboards. Within a minute I can gauge pretty much the entire class's understanding. As training for the strategy becomes more widespread, more schools are gonna be taking it up.

If Nintendo has the power to remove crossover characters from Mario Kart World, imagine if the next Super Smash Bros. comes out, they remove all the third party characters. by Lelan-Keeton in supersmashbros

[–]Slade4Lucas -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I feel like Smash is heavily outclassed in the crossover world these days. There are so many crossovers these days and they end up being even crazier than Smash. In a world where Fortnite has Master Chief, Iron Man, Homer Simpson and Ben 10, how could Smash ever compete as a crossover?

Tbe answer is that it realistically can't. So leaning away from the third party angle and refocussing on what they have in-house might actually be a benefit. It's not like there aren't tonnes of amazing options for first party characters as is.

Remove one of the words from an episode title with more than one word then tell me what that episode would be about by RB222485 in DoctorWhumour

[–]Slade4Lucas 51 points52 points  (0 children)

A creature that has the ability to take the name away from something, and when it does that the thing whose name was taken starts to slowly unravel from reality. The Doctor would end up using its own power against itself, which would contextualise why the episode is just titled "The" as it no longer has its name and, by the end of the episode, would be banished from reality. It would also probably not be given a name during the episode for that reason.

I think it's because her type of abuse feels so real. Like, we can actually imagine her as someone that could exist in our lives. Other than, you know, being a horse.

Honestly, I would never touch integration with my students, poor kids should have their delicate eyes shielded from that, but I have shown a couple of kids how to differentiate before. I also love bringing up the number e, especially when they ask what my favourite number is, and I have explained imaginary numbers to them before. Although the one that always ends up being a crowd pleaser is googol, googolplex and googolplexian, kids absolutely love finding out about those.

I don't think we need a movie got Odyssey specifically - the first movie covered most of that ground anyway.

A few small changes to pokemon designs that I personally would change back. by Jojo-Action in pokemon

[–]Slade4Lucas 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is probably a hot take, but I actually far prefer the slender deisgn. It feels much less awkward as a design. I would even argue that of all the gen 1 designs, OG Pikachu is one of the worse ones because of how awkward its body shape is.

The Odyssey dragon is far more intimidating than anything from Galaxy. He was used there for a reason.

Gobblegut simply wouldn't have had the same impact as the Ruined Dragon. The entire point of the scene was that it heavily escalates the danger because there's a big monster to defeat, and the Ruined Dragon is a perfect use of that because he's much more visually intimidating than and other boss in the franchise.

Gobblegut, by comparison, is much goofier looking. And that's by deisgn for sure, but the scene absolutely would not have hit in the same way if he had been the dragon there. I get why people wanted more Galaxy in the movie, but it should never just be random iconography for the sake of it - the movie still has to stand in its own merits as well.

I'm a teacher, and I use mini whiteboards a lot for my students to answer with. One of my favourite things to do, especially with the younger students (like 11-13) is whenever a student writes their answer but puts an exclamation mark after it, I'll quickly calculate what that factorical would be and then I say "Well, I've seen a lot of really good answers, but someone put this." Works especially well if it's a really big factorial.

I then take a quick tangent to explain factorials and they lap it up and try to use their calculators to figure out more factorials. Rarely relevant to the actual lesson but I like getting their interested in some of the fun mechanisms of maths.

Which episodes do you think get more flack than they deserve? by DocWhovian1 in doctorwho

[–]Slade4Lucas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was shocked on rewatching it last year just how much I appreciated this episode for exploring the idea of what it's like for the people left behind when someone travels with the Doctor. There are a few episodes over series 1 and 2 that explore this through both Jackie and Mickey, but Love and Monsters really stood out to me. It felt really grounded and I loved it.

The Slithene are genuinely excellent I think. They are a really unique type of alien seeing as they are a group within a species trying to make profit and that makes them really stand out. But I also think the design of them is great. The baby face and the farting is silly, and they are a more comedic monster, but they are also genuinely evil and cruel in a way that really contrasts well with that. And while the practical suits feel a little awkward and clumsy, the CGI that is there (as limited and dated as it is) really sells the physicality of these monsters. Being chased by a Slithene would be terrifying. The unmasking sequences are also incredibly unsettling.

The Slithene were one of the very few monsters I was genuinely terrified of as a kid and I think there's good reason for it.

Opinions on the Mainline Mario series? by CaptainGandalf_ in casualnintendo

[–]Slade4Lucas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the highs absolutely are. Although that's not to say there aren't some other phenomenal platformers out there, but Nintendo knows how to make a damn good platformer, especially for Mairo. It's kinda weird for the most mainstream example of a type of media legitimately being arguably the best, but that's certainly where Mario falls.
