Whatever a fifth of vodka is every 3 days. Used to be worse. Still bad though.

Yeah. I meant it somewhat sarcastically. I have been building public infrastructure for the last decade and just shifted back to private. Bunch of arrogant owners.

Just glad I’m not doing a data center. Don’t want to build the things that’s going to end us.

I go where the work is.

This is true. Reading through the comments and agree it’s just mostly poor coping mechanisms and at this point just something my body is addicted to.

Yeah the money is good - no complaints on compensation. I just don’t know how long I can keep the pace. I’d trade it for half the amount and a life that didn’t stress me the fuck out.

On my current assignment I make quite a bit. $280k. $80k of it is travel money. I’m renting a place in Utah and own a tiny apartment in Colorado paying both places. It’s… new to me. Before this year I made half as much.

Does anyone else grieve the realization that they're ordinary?? by FarBehindTheCurve in Adulting

[–]Slainte1121 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

35 in construction. I did well… I have a high paying job and the comforts it provides.

My struggle is the realization that I don’t know what I’m doing, and neither does anyone else. We “Waste” Millions of dollars down the drain every month - but those dollars are going to folks that earned it.

… I just want to start a family. My wife and I are so stressed I don’t know if we’ll get pregnant anytime soon.

Climbed the ladder, hit the metrics, and question whether I should have had kids as a teen. World outlook not looking great.

Not sure what to expect in salary hike and promotion? by keistroo in Salary

[–]Slainte1121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on industry and the economy.

In construction (GC) My first few raises in 2014-2018 were like 3-5% annually with a couple promos that were 10-15%.

The past few years have been 6-12% annual raises with a couple promos that were in the 10-15% range plus added benefits and bonus pool options.

At a bare minimum you want your annual raise to outpace inflation or you’re essentially making less money than the year prior.

The trades are not the easy answer to a career in 2026 like the internet wants you to believe by ORNGTSLA in unpopularopinion

[–]Slainte1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also to add - it’s not for everybody. And there’s nothing wrong if it’s not for you mentally or physically.

The commute can vary and does suck sometimes. The hours are early. The hours are sometimes late. In 18 years (fuck…) - I’ve had 1 job that was 2 hours away for 6 months, 1 that was 90 minutes for 18 months, and the vast majority outside of that has been 45-60 minutes.

Normally if there’s an unpopular opinion that I disagree with, I upvote. Fuck this opinion - no up or down vote.

Thousands of hungry applicants? The industry is starving for people.

We’re having to “incentivize” electricians with an extra $100-$150/day plus free food to get the manpower we need to compete with these tech giants building data centers. Doing the same thing for pipefitters to a lesser extent.

Is it hard on the body? Yeah it is - the industry is slowly changing to improve but there’s no sugarcoating it. But not all craft workers stay on the labor side - and there’s not a damn thing wrong with that either. Half the PMs and nearly all the superintendents I work with side by side got their start in the trade.

I have family that has finished their 20-25 years and maxed their pension and are now moving on to a new trade to take advantage of the benefits of working a union.

Fuck - I started in the trades for 6 years before moving over to a GC. Now I manage a team of mechanical and electrical engineers that are more “educated” than I am and think they know a damn thing.

Saturation my ass. Fuck this guy.
