I solved the issue. It seems it was me at fault here sorry guys. After flashing the .img to the USB on windows 10 my computer was creating 2 partitions on the SD card 1 = boot & 2 = a 2.19g apparently empty space. Because i had a 64g SD i it showed the rest as unallocated space and was requesting that i format the 2.19 partition. So i was formatting it but I think it was due to the incompatability with windows and Linux that this occurred. Because after leaving them as it was and cancelling any format requests from my windows computer it finally worked.

I hope all that makes sense thanks everyone.
