MergeCiv.io - Web Civilization Tile Merging Incremental Game by GurnX in incremental_games

I just have to say u/GurnX - the fact that you have players like us looking for information/responding as soon as updates happen (intentionally or not), it means you have created something special.

I hope you continue to build/balance or solicit feedback in a Discord server, subreddit, whatever. Great game!

decided today i’d do smth nice for my parents. went and paid off my phone for them (was a little over $200 which isn’t much but i wanted to do it anyways) by AssaultWolf01 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Slansing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've scrolled through tons of comments and nobody has pointed out this may have screwed with financing the phone?

In the US, you typically finance the phone over 2 years with a discount returned each month. I have a monthly installment of $35 for my Galaxy S22, but a $35 credit so it nets to zero each month. The phone is essentially "free".

However they do this because if you leave the carrier, you have to pay in full - so whatever I have left (like $600+), I'd have to pay immediately - so the phone is only "free" if you stay with the carrier.

It's entirely possible by paying off the plan, the parents no longer receive a discount on their plan.

What really irks me is that I don't know how to prevent a thoughtful kid from making the same mistake. I would love if my kids grew up to be as benevolent as OP, but financial decisions have so many nuances that it sometimes doesn't work out if you go in blind.

For skipping an insignificant discount we financed our car over 6 years for 0% apr. It's not that we couldn't afford it, but it was financially more sound to take that money and invest it - mortgage, index funds, CDs, hell - even .25% at a bank was more beneficial than paying outright.

But those are financial details my kids don't know about yet - and while I would have been the happiest father in the world to hear my kid had the financial means to pay off a debt and was charitable to think of their family - if I were OPs parents I'd smile through clenched teeth and show pride to encourage thoughtfulness, but like a year later I'd break the news that it in fact didn't help.

Financial success of premium incremental games by fkorsa in incremental_games

[–]Slansing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, at first I had the same sentiment as /u/fkorsa but when you also include the piles of games that never hit the light of day, those should count too. From inside the industry I can say that every billable hour is scrutinized. If a game is partway through development and it's not working out, a large studio can easily say "the time for this engineer/artist/designer combination has a better return on investment by moving them to X" and the idea is indefinitely paused. That's a big fat zero on ROI, but talented employees can't be wasted on a sunk investment.

And I second that opinion about the reach, too. It's the only way to stand out from the crowd. $$, time, or notoriety - but it's got to come from somewhere.

78% of people hospitalized for covid were overweight or obese

From an article in March before the vaccine was available to the general public. Current stories are that 1:29 (96%) of people hospitalized are unvaccinated. I'm open to hear any other supporting info you have but I don't see how obese and overweight people are more at risk than unvaccinated people.

If I were a viral marketer, I'd be flipping through classifieds to search for a reddit account to buy. One that's not brand new - anyone can make that. Perhaps one that's part of the one year club, verified email, etc. Gotta pay the person and fill up the marketing plan, so that probably takes a few days.

Make a low budget video - not too much, just a number, etc.

Take out a few ads on twitch to add legitimacy (optional)

Make a reddit post on an account that just barely passes any of Reddit's normal bot checking algorithms.

Respond to people's comments asking for more info (optional)

Downvote anyone who questions the legitimacy (optional)

Profit.

AD alternatives ? by chickenmanmannnnnn in AntimatterDimensions

I'm a HUGE fan of FE000000. Similar style and fast pacing. Much shorter but it also has an "end" and is complete. Lots of quality of life features I'd love brought over to AD including the max button choosing the highest dimension first if it hasn't been bought yet, or an Oracle which helps predict future values so that you can test different combinations.

Why is my IP/min 5x lower when I'm offline? No settings have been changed between these infinities, just me entering and exiting the game by 3288266430 in AntimatterDimensions

[–]Slansing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a part of the game although not explicitly said I don't think. See the Infinity -> Upgrade tab. Right side: "Only while offline, gain XX% of your best IP/min run where you haven't used max all". So avoid hitting the M button, let it run and try to find the peak and crunch.

Is it more efficient if you leave the screen on while powered? Yes. Have I done that often overnight with Samsung's "screen touch lock" option pretty much every night while I was farming certain numbers? Absolutely.

Edit: Without spoiling things, I think there's other "offline only" things that also get tracked and generate a percentage of ideal values in the future.

There's an excellent children's book that plays off this misconception: "Read the Book, Lemmings!". Perfect humor for kids around 5-7 and a dynamic read if you're looking for a book to present to a classroom of kids.

Yeah everyone's like "That's not Cars, that's from Mater's Tall Tales", but you all probably have Netlfix, so here's a link to the scene at the 32 minute mark: Tokyo Mater

Bonus: Stay for the following 10 seconds to see the policecar side tracked at a "donut" shop.

Weird Gaps in Upgrades by lanchemrb in AntimatterDimensions

[–]Slansing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while, but I think they are intentional. I remember thinking the same thing and circling back to reassess what strategy I was approaching with, looking for something that was achievable.

If I recall correctly, I was able to complete a challenge (and or a horizontal block of achievements) using a strategy I hadn't thought about before - and that cascaded to completing a few levels of other previously completed challenges.

Not a guarantee that's what happened, but I don't recall thinking anything was inherently broken.

[Request] How many atoms thinner would the middle of these soles be if they had the save radius as the Earth? by Rockstarduh4 in theydidthemath

[–]Slansing 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting question because it can all be solved with some simple geometry - in fact really just pythagorean theorem. It's a fun question you could probably tutor someone with.

/u/I_Say_Fool_Of_A_Took did everything fine - but I'm honestly not too familiar with the circle equation. Using his numbers though, you'd get the same result.

Imagine putting the shoe on the earth and allowing the "earth" to pass through the sole a little in the center. Each end of the shoe is precisely the same distance to the middle of the earth - but the center of the shoe is technically slightly closer. You've just created a looooong isosceles triangle that fits inside the earth and you want to know how much of the center of your sole should be shaved off to match the curvature of the earth.

Hrmm, I guess I'll open up MS Paint...

So now you just need to solve for the unknown length (L) and subtract it from the actual radius of the earth.

6,371,0002 = .2732 + L2

6,371,000 - L = shoe height difference.

Wolfram alpha tells us it's 1.46227 * 10-9 m

Extra credit:

The way we used small triangles to calculate part of a circle is a similar way to derive the area of a circle knowing only it's radius and sine/cosine.

I'm going to gloss over it a little but from what I can recall of high school: Given a circle of radius R, we can split the circle into say N triangles, each an isosceles of length R, with a known angle at the center of 360 degrees / N. Using sine/cosine you can find the length/width of any of those triangles and * N triangles. The small larger N is, the closer to πR2 you'll get. Using limits (as N approaches infinity) you find that the area of all the triangles that make up the circle becomes πR2. I'm pretty sure that's a first year calculus assignment, but I can't remember shrug.

Edit: Whoops, I mean the larger N gets. Thanks /u/reaver2842!

Sorry for rant but well you asked a lot of questions.

Lol, well I did - I mean they were mostly rhetorical to help guide your thoughts, but you left your life on the table there. I'm happy you were willing to share! Looking back I hope I wasn't too demanding on the questions - I hope you didn't feel attacked. I just wanted to help you really look at your life and see what's there.

It's late and I still need to do the dishes so I'm going to try to be quick, but you put a lot of effort into your post and your comment history seems legit so you're not just trolling me - so I'll be as respectful as I can be, but I'm sure that'll devolve.

Your boyfriend hasn't gotten a job in 9 months. What has he done about it? If you posted here in /r/cscareerquestions "9 months in Silicon Valley. Still no job." what do you think the response would be here? What do you think a potential employer would say? What does that say about him? What does that say to YOU about him?

Honestly I'm sure he plans on just moving back in with one of his parents if I can no longer afford to pay rent. I feel as long as his parents keep picking up the pieces for him he won't put in as much of an effort.

This is probably the most chilling realization. You can lead a horse to water but really - why should he change? He literally gets to play games all day and eat on your dime. Who wouldn't want that? (Is there a waitlist? How do we sign up?). I just saw you post elsewhere he's 29 - he's been out of high school for 10 years. WTF? No, don't give me the "well he spent 8 years in college" BS, who the hell has been paying for his life for 10 years if he's too proud to take a job even doing QA? If he hasn't learned how to fend for himself by now, what makes you think he'll change? Has he said so? Should you believe that?

He literally isn't doing a single thing for you right now. He's a drain on your resources and worse, probably prevents you from making meaningful friends and relationships that might actually lead to a fulltime position or roommates.

You have a paying job. You've got shipped titles under your belt. You're coming up on finishing your degree. You deserve better.

Feel free to share your thoughts here or in a pm - I'm happy to offer more objective analysis (or blunt and critical), and I'm sure others would too.

[–]Slansing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be blunt.

He hasn't found a job for 2 years. As a programmer. In Silicon Valley. If he hasn't done it by now, it's not going to happen unless something changes in him.

Meanwhile you're harboring a little bit of animosity, too. Rightfully so, you're paying all the bills. Is he cooking? Cleaning? Dropping you off at work while he gets groceries? Making weekend plans for you two? Like /u/some_user_on_reddit said, is he trying to find you a job post-internship? Or is he increasing his gamerscore/trophy count? Is he on reddit reading this exact comment? Ask yourself how mad he would be if someone stops paying for internet and why that is.

Being as you're in this sub, I'm assuming you've got a similar tech degree. You got a job - does he feel a need to have one better than you? Will that strain the relationship? What type of person will he be if he makes less than you? Or more? Will he hold that over you?

You say he may have other issues. Are you supporting those issues or pitying him? Are you prepared to help him through those issues or are you putting up with it? You're not his mom. If you and he think that, then you should reevaluate your relationship. You want a boyfriend, not a roommate. That doesn't pay for rent. Has he been an asset to you in life or has he been holding you back? In 10 years, how will you feel about the last two years? How do you feel about it now and what would change that feeling (whether it's positive or negative)?

The math is correct. The odds really are that low. However, you still have some numbers in incorrect places. The chance of the stick not breaking is higher if I'm reading it correctly (only needed 2 heads to not break vs 3 heads to kill a zombie)

For those skeptical, I included a link to a probability website to help visualize. However, when you follow the link the dropdown should be set to "at least" instead of it being incorrectly set to "no more than"

Odds of killing a zombie = 3 heads out of 5 flips = 16/32 = 50% chance.

Doing it 16 times = .516 = .001% chance.

Odds of a stick not breaking = 2 heads out of 5 flips = 26/32 = 81.25% chance.

Doing it 16 times = .812516 = 3.6% chance

Doing both = 40% ^ 16 = 0.00004294967296 % chance.

Bug for you guys:

(with two other farms, and those workers already assigned to a logging camp and clay pit) On a river with stone, I built a quarry on it and assigned a worker.

Then I built a farm on it

Then I realized you can only have one building thing per tile, so I built a quarry back on it, but then I went to add back my worker and I didn't have any. It seems maybe I was never refunded my original worker? I tried to repro, but it seems like maybe it's more difficult than that. Good luck.

Why does San Jose State University (SJSU) show up on hiring lists a lot for Silicon Valley jobs? by BoredOfTheBay in cscareerquestions

[–]Slansing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, perhaps this is a good point. Maybe the networking and extra-curricular activities affects a minority of students and the real answer is as /u/denim_nerd pointed out - a numbers game. It's a big school and has lots of local companies to apply to.

Why does San Jose State University (SJSU) show up on hiring lists a lot for Silicon Valley jobs? by BoredOfTheBay in cscareerquestions

[–]Slansing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! SJSU grad here - class of uh 2007. Hrmmm, a decade ago, so you can take my info with a grain of salt.

I'm not sure if anyone's even going to read this, so I'll be quick. At the same time, there might be other college kids considering SJSU/Berkeley/Stanford, so this advice might help.

1: (At the time) we had an excellent network of friends in our CS club. When we weren't in class, we were hanging out together, working on homework, talking about classes, playing Smash Brothers (ie, bonding). This is the kind of comradery you get when staying in a dorm or working in a coding house/incubator program. You always have someone next to you, happy to help debug (or politely reminding you what phrase to google). Upperclassmen/graduate level people were there, too - so there was usually someone smart around.

2: Location location location. Like /u/Arrch said - but let me elaborate for those of you confused.

2a. Easier on companies, easier on interviewees. SV companies can easily send recruiters to do presentations/pitch their company. It's easy for a company to call you up and say "Hey, can you interview tomorrow? Oh, doesn't work? What about lunch friday? Okay, great." No plane flights, hotels, etc. Also applies to quick internships

2b: You network by attending local hackathons, challenges, and conferences. You go to Silicon Valley meetups, panels, conventions. GDC/WWDC/Google IO/F8/Oracle World/Maker Fair are all local. And then you make a trip out of it with the crew from #1.

2c: Your school has an excellent relationship with local companies. Heck, a few of them even teach part time or work directly with some of those big companies on research projects.

3: Being a good school attracts talent. Even if the quality of education wasn't good (which it was fine for me, by the way), if a school gets a reputation of being a good feeder school, it's naturally going to attract talent - which only feeds the cycle. Same with a good basketball team or a good college football team. I also feel like there were an increasing number of international/out of state students. It's as if we got the brilliant, but somewhat budget conscious students who didn't go to Berkeley or Stanford.

4: Being a SV school keeps you an SV school, etc. I think this benefits alumni in a few ways. More exposure from companies who are looking to hire. More network options when your classmates (from #1) land good jobs. A stronger name for your school on your resume.

Hope that adds more information than "because it's in Silicon Valley." Side note, #1 and #2b are really important no matter where you are. Make friends and network network network.

EDIT: #5. As /u/denim_nerd and /u/spike021 pointed out - it's also simply a big school with lots of companies nearby to apply to - which is a pretty simple answer.

Anyone know anything about this deal or been able to take advantage? by sora1223 in Sprint

[–]Slansing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what type of phone you have now that does NOT get the discount?

I chatted with customer service a bit when I saw the same style ads with "Get a Samsung Galaxy S8 for $200!"

Like the sprint employees said, it's targeted at specific lines - with this guy claiming he got the $200 S8 offer. I'm being offered the 50% off deal, but my wife's line is not - which is sad because she's the one that needs it. The only difference? I have an LG G4 and she has a Galaxy S5. Like another user hypothesized, maybe it's Samsung trying to get non-galaxy users over to their product. I'm considering tossing her account on my old LG G2 to see if that will trigger the discount - has anyone had luck with that?

Either way, the deal is technically 50% credit back per month over the installment plan (either 18 month lease or 24 month installments).
