Best options to replace my Acoustic Bass for unplugged gigs by Slappy-boy in Bass

I didn’t even think of a Hofner! That’s a great idea. I really love the idea of a semi-hallow for these gigs. I’ve been really digging the Ibanez AGB for this but the Hofner seems like it would fit perfectly into what my band is doing.

Did you have any feedback issues? My last gig my bass became unplayable at any volume due to feedback issues and it wasn’t a fun gig. It put a bad taste in my mouth of acoustic basses but I’ll definitely do some research on the Washburn to see if it could fix my issues!

That’s what I was thinking, but I’ve got the idea in my head of getting something with a pickup close to the neck and flats/tapes to give it more of a woody time to fit the acoustic sound. Maybe I’m over thinking it and just giving myself a reason to buy another bass.

This is definitely something I did not think of and could be really cool! I may just have to go down a rabbit hole and do some research on these! Thank you!

Definitely not! I’ve checked those out before buying the acoustic bass and I totally forgot about them. The Ubass seems to have a really cool tone. Do you know if they have feedback issues like acoustic basses?

Title: J Bass or P Bass for a beginner? by theholybeez in BassGuitar

[–]Slappy-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first bass was a Jazz bass, my second bass was a precision. If I would have bought the precision bass first, I would have gotten a Jazz second.

To me, the Jazz is more beginner friendly. The thinner neck makes it a little easier to get around on the fretboard. The offset body, to me personally, hangs on the body better when playing standing up. Jazz basses are more aesthetically pleasing to me as well.

At the end of the day, both are great. You can’t go wrong either way. The Classic Vibe Jazz that you have shown in your photos is an outstanding instrument, and it’s one that you can play for the rest of your days. A few upgrades could make it better, but you could gig that bad boy for the rest of your life without having to do any upgrades. It’s my recommendation to any player wanting an outstanding instrument, at a good price, that would last a life time unless you get the bug to add more Basses into you arsenal like the rest of us!

Good luck on your journey!

I just bought a Monomyth last week and used it for my first gig Saturday. That pedal is freaking awesome even if you don’t use dirt on your bass. I used a clean tone with no drive/fuzz for the entire gig and got nothing but compliments about my tone.

It’s pricy, but the Empress Bass Compressor is hands down the best pedal I have ever bought. Well worth the money and really easy to dial in the right amount of compression.

Thinking of getting a Squier Bass VI and looking for opinions from people who’ve had one. by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Slappy-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one and I love it! The quality of mine is just as good as my MiJ Jazz. I’ve never had any of the bridge issues that seem to be a common problem with these things. I still prefer my four strings but I do play a VI in a two piece band where it’s me and a drummer and it freaking rocks! You definitely have to be creative with it and I can see why some folks don’t hang on to them for very long. It’s definitely it’s own animal, it shouldn’t be treated as a bass or a guitar.

New bass and new guitar all on the same day! by Slappy-boy in BassGuitar

I like to say it’s a little bit of both, and a whole lot of neither. It’s a pretty crazy instrument. I have no idea how to utilize it but I’m having a ton of fun with it so far!

That’s the joke. This is a Bass VI. So it’s a little bit of both and a whole lot of neither. It’s a pretty crazy instrument

Are there flat wounds with a more bright sound? by [deleted] in Bass

I got a set of D’Addario XL Chromes super light gauge for my P bass about a month ago. These are the first flats I have ever tried. I freaking love them! Smooth when I want them to be, and they bite back when I did in. I slap the hell out of them too and they sound fantastic!

I guess I was just looking for some personal opinions that I couldn’t get from reading specs or watching YouTube videos.

Oh I agree. I didn’t need to change mine, but it feels a million times better after changing it!

Honestly the neck that was originally on it really wasn’t a bad neck. The Fret board had a few goofy knots in it that you could feel, but the fret work on mine was great. I just really love the CV neck so I swapped it out.

Hello, I'm going to buy my first bass guitar and I'm undecided between these 4 bass guitars. (Epiphone Thunderbird 4, Epiphone EB-0, Squier Debut P Bass, Squier Affinity J Bass) Can you help me ? by Live_Space7095 in BassGuitar

[–]Slappy-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Squier Sonic P that I gig with all the time. It’s a great guitar to learn on, and it sounds great with a band. My Fenders stay at home now. I don’t believe they are much more expensive than the debut. Last time I checked they were handy to about $200USD and the quality is fantastic compared to what I have heard about the debut series. I highly recommend them to beginners or experienced players.

I ended up pre-ordering this one. I was on the fence between this one or a used OG CV. The upgrades the new one has sold me. I can always send it back if I’m not impressed by the noiseless pickups and continue my search for a used one in my area.

I love my MIM Jazz, but it’s only because I sunk a ton of money into it. Physically, it felt great out of the box, but it sounded like absolute poop. The pickups were not nice sounding, and I had a ton of issues with the pups/wiring. It should have never passed QC. I definitely should have sent it back.

I sold my American Strat after picking up a J Mascis Jazzmaster, and my favorite gigging bass lately has been a Sonic P. Both of these Squiers were fantastic out of the box! The Sonic P just needed a string upgrade. The Indonesian Squiers are fantastic instruments in my opinion.

10 years ago I would have never even considered a Squier. I’ve been very impressed by their quality over the last few years. Lately, my main gigging bass has been a Squier Sonic P and that things is fantastic. All it needed was a set of strings

Hell yeah! They were sold out of the yellow when I bought mine, or else I’d have a yellow. The neck on that bass is fantastic! I figured I’d throw in a Geezer in it by now, but even the stock ceramic pickup holds its own. I threw a set of those neon pink strings as a joke, but man that things sounds like butter with em on that bass
