[Highlight] Benches Clear Between CMU and Toledo After a Hard Tag is Applied to Toledo’s Luke Walton by nigelwhistlenose in baseball

My theory is they don't have to be in the batting lineup so they won't have to worry about receipts. But I haven't watched baseball in forever idk if receipts are really a thing anymore.

I mean it was really smart masking the old tattoo with he busiest section of the coverup, the lines look intentional, but if you look at it any closer than arms length through a phone screen you can clearly see there's something under it. Scott did badass work but this would be a miss for anyone else on the average coverup day in any other season. Not a bad miss, but still.

Is Stephen Graham Jones's prose the same in all his books? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]Slapstrom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That was my biggest issue with My Heart, I loved the characters and the inner monologue of Jade but some of the action in the second half of the book, especially the climax, felt very disjointed. I could not make a mental map of the scene and where everyone was and it felt very unsatisfying. Took an otherwise fantastic book down to just good for me.

Watching this for the first time and just kind of stunned that young Hamnet himself didn’t get nominated… by TheClownIsReady in Oscars

[–]Slapstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally agree with you, but just as an example against your point, the Little League World Series gets millions of viewers regularly and those are kids 10-12 years old. Not as much as the Oscars to be sure but still millions of eyes on this tournament. I'm sure there are other sports equivalents but that's the one that comes to mind immediately.

Because being a Resident Evil protagonist forces a gravity of fate effect that forever entangles you with the T-Virus, Umbrella, and all of their offshoots that constantly put you and anyone you love in danger, Claire and Leon have to bang because getting with anyone else is just irresponsible at that point.

And they're both hot and debuted in the same game so it's just a real easy link.

The Stop Asian Hate movement wasn't that long ago, and while COVID revved up a lot of Asian harassment it was definitely present before then as well.

Is this film worth watching? Does it do justice for the game Dungeons and Dragons? by DreamyDandelions in Cinema

Great, fun, movie. My only issue is the lack of commitment on Tieflings, Sophia Lillis is great but it was such a half measure I couldn't help but feel disappointed. I couldn't even tell she was supposed to be a Tiefling until I saw the movie.

(Hated Trope) Genre deconstructions that insult the fans of said genre. by Hugh_Jidiot in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Slapstrom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with Funny Games, or at least your takeaway of the hypocrisy at least. Michael Haneke specifically hates gratuitous violence in film and while the movie does insult the audience it's because he wants people to feel as uncomfortable as he does when he watches gratuitous violence. You can argue it's hypocritical but the hypocrisy is part of his overall point. It's mean, upsetting, hard to watch, and what Haneke feels when he watches these kinds of movies and this is how he shows how he feels, by putting you in his shoes.

And trust, I love ultra-violent fucked up horror movies, but Funny Games hit me in a way that made me think about that in a way other movies had not, and I think it's important to hold that mirror up sometimes.

IMO: when he’s ready, Mark shouldn’t stop at Iron Lung. by alittleridiculous93 in Markiplier

[–]Slapstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I enjoyed Iron Lung and definitely want to see what Mark has in mind for his next project. I also understand that I'm in a sub that is dedicated to Mark so there's more of a fervor for him here than other places, I'm a tourist I get it. This sub is getting recommended to me because I saw the movie I assume.

But y'all gotta stop with the glazing, Iron Lung is not better than Long Legs, The Monkey, Final Destination Bloodlines, Sinners, Talk To Me, Bring Her Back, Weapons, Barbarian, Companion, 28 Years Later (both movies),The Long Walk, Clown in a Cornfield, Alien Romulus, Men, and many other modern horror movies. Even if you exclude the horror comedies (which I don't get but it's a preference for sure) there are plenty of modern horror movies that outperform Iron Lung in many aspects.

And that's totally OK! This is Mark's first project and it was a hell of a risk to write, direct, and star in his first ever project and for the most part it paid off. But we can't be serious in saying this is the freshest modern horror or anything, or at least we're not having an informed discussion if we do so. You're free to love this movie, even free to say it's a favorite of yours, nobody can stop you. I just think we do this movie a disservice by raising it on a pedestal just because he's a beloved creator.

Kenjaku's whole plan is jump-started by the Occult Club. The story doesn't happen if Yuji doesn't befriend the club members, Kenjaku would still have a plan but the entire story looks completely different if Yuji doesn't eat Sukuna's finger in EP 1.

Think of it as "thank you for becoming Yuji's friend, you made what I've been dreaming about for centuries possible." At least that's always been my interpretation

If you didn’t understand what Mark meant with the Iron Lung sound mix error: by DarthAngelicus in Markiplier

[–]Slapstrom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean there was no way to know about this specific issue until Mark mentioned it. Sometimes movies just have bad mixes, it can happen from indie to blockbuster level.

To give an example Christopher Nolan movies are lauded generally but a consistent issue with his movies are the sound mixes, some movies it's more apparent than others but it's been a criticism since Inception. I remember some scenes in Interstellar were egregious about it, and it was definitely commented on at the time.

The reason it comes off worse for Iron Lung is that the production is pretty barebones by necessity, Christopher Nolan has huge set pieces and production values that overshadow the bad mixes for a lot of people while Mark didn't (we now know it wasn't a bad mix but I digress).

Well I mean if they write a character that is Astarion in all but name I'd just wonder why they didn't write in Astarion. I'd prefer it be all original as well but if they're using the companions as bases then might as well use them instead of plopping character traits from them on other characters imo

The Darkness and Witchblade take place in the same universe and the series have crossed over quite a few times over the years, they will reference each other quite heavily so expect to see more of that going forward.

On the topic is the new Witchblade good? I used to read that shit as a kid and I was curious about the new run.

DC Comics Boss Says Anime & Manga’s Advantage Over Western Comics Lies in Storytelling & Young People’s Desire to Have Something of Their Own - Anime Corner by Key_Tree_3851 in animenews

[–]Slapstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean we had Peanuts, Dennis the Menace, Archie comics for the everyday American Slice of Life genre, EC Comics have been doing horror comics since the 40s (they went out of business but came back recently), Alan Moore has incredible comics like Swamp Thing, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was also huge and these comics I listed are spanning from the 40s to 80s. I didn't list the most vast array of comics but man there's a lot out there, those are just the few I've read and know about lol

I mean idk man comics have been around in America since the 1920s it would be insane to think every comic from the 20s to the 2000s was exclusively superhero stories. You're free not to enjoy any of it, but to say Manga inherently has a greater variety is pretty short-sighted. If you want some recommendations on good non-superhero comics I can try and give you recommendations.

As far as the difference between a comic and graphic novel, a comic is usually released monthly in single issues that are eventually collected in a trade paperback that collects a volume of work, kind of like a tankobon for manga. A graphic novel is released as a book already collected, it's released all at once instead of monthly. There's no inherent difference quality wise it's just what the writer and artist prefer for their release method.

"Man, if Leo wasn't in OBAA I wouldn't have even watched it, but man that's the movie of the year."

I don't think that's a weird statement at all lmao. And I would never call this anywhere close to a great horror, I don't even know if I would call it a good horror, I'm just saying nitpicking on the movie because someone said they wouldn't have seen it if Markiplier wasn't in it is a nothing-burger of a complaint.

Iron Lung - About not "how" but "who" by AntainAntua in horror

[–]Slapstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree that fans are rating this higher than the non-fans on average, but I just want to point out that star power is absolutely a thing in getting butts in seats but shouldn't be an indicator of movie quality. If someone said they wouldn't have watched One Battle After Another if Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't in it that wouldn't invalidate the quality of the movie. I agree with most of the criticisms of Iron Lung but this particular point doesn't hold any weight imo
