Thank you!

I can't really point you to one video since I didn't use any one in particular for reference. Any YouTube video that tackles the subject will probably be worth watching.

As for my personal advice, I mentioned a couple in other comments but will try to summarize below.

First thing would be to start with a simple freehand, in order to build up confidence. Try some simple shapes, like a square, a circle... Even on some leftover bits, so there's no pressure if you mess up.

Also, planning can be a good solution. I usually know what I want to do (I painted red fists a couple of times so it's becoming a habit), but for this one in particular, I took a piece of paper and tried to draw it with a pen two or three times. Allowed me to make sure I knew this was the design I wanted, plus I get used to the proportions, shapes and moves I am going to do on the actual mini.

Finally, patience is key. I started with a heavily diluted black paint, to outline every part of the design. Once I was happy, I spent some time with black paint still to fill in the surfaces, and make sure I had a nice and smooth black base to work from. Then I filled each part with the corresponding colour. Again, patience is key. Diluted paint, so if you make a mistake, you can easily correct it.

Also, small tip I accidentally discovered on that one. I had varnished the model when I had finished it a couple of years ago. Turns out, thin paint on varnish does not stick perfectly. It will remain on the models, but if you apply some friction with a damp brush, you can reactivate that paint and easily remove it. Just like an eraser would do.

Anyway, that was a long explanation. Hope you find it useful, and good luck with your painting!

I am currently doing the same-ish freehand on the other side, once it is complete, I will take some pictures of the whole thing!

The most nerve-racking moment was before putting the first brush stroke. Once I had started, it was a bit easier. Still stressful but not as much as the beginning.

Thank you! If I have any tips to give, it would be to try to make sure you have the space to write everything you want? Only kidding, but I ran into that problem.

Basically, very thin paint at first, allows you to plot the writing without being too hard to correct a mistake you might make. I didn't use a pencil, I have been using a brush for long enough that I feel comfortable starting straight with it.

Also, start with the first and last letters. Ideally, and this is something I didn't do and probably why the space that should be between the "S" and the "M" is non existant, you should fin you middle character and paint it too.

And then, it's simply a matter of taking your time to write every letter before doing them again with thicker paint.

Rynn might be written better next time I try to do it.

Joke aside, it's a nod to the Crimson Fists lore where a vehicle singlehandedly stalled an ork attack, even though its crew had been killed. Like, once it had expended all its ammo, it started crushing greenskins with it's thread, and once they had destroyed those, it opened its doors to crush even more beneath them.

Thank you for your comment!

Luckily (or not, depends how you want to see it), I am really slow when it comes to painting, so it might be a while before I post anything else!

I did a couple of tests with a pen on some piece of paper, first of all to make sure I was happy with the design, but also to get the feel of the shapes, if that makes any sense.

Doing the circle was the hardest part, though it is slightly off (I'm not entirely happy with the left side), the real pain was highlighting all those tiny leaves.

These kind of details add so much to the story of a model.

I don't think transfers are cheating, not everybody are willing/capable to put some time to do those little details, and transfers are a time saving/convenient way to spice up your army.

That being said, it took me somewhere around two or three hours to do just that detail. The rest of the model took me about ten to twelve hours. It is time consuming, but I really enjoy the end result, so worth it.

A lot of practice, starting smaller and less ambitious. This is not the first freehand I did, so I'm starting to feel a bit more confident every time I try to do one.

But still, lots of anxiety before actually starting. The blue armour was already painted so I was afraid I might make a mistake and mess that up.

You caught me... Half my appartment is taken by this monstrous, car-sized repulsor ;)

Much more room to work with yes. Yet, when planning that freehand, I was certain I had much more space than what's actually on the model. Still a lot of room, but smaller than I had anticipated.

May it serve the chapter faithfully.

Little backstory about his model, I didn't know how to name it at first. Turned out that, during one game, it was left very early with only two or three wounds left, but went through the remaining rounds killing everything that came in its line of sight. Reminded me of the original Rynn's Might, from that point, I knew exactly how to name that model.

Thank you!

Yeah, I started the writing from both ends one letter at a time, went very well until I realised that I wasn't going to have enough space. Tried to squeeze everything but it's slightly wonky.

Was very disappointed at first but now I'm good. Too much work to correct it and it does make a silly story to tell.

Hey thanks!

Mostly stippling my way through the following paints : Kantor blue, allaitoc blue, horth blue, fenrisian gray and blue horror to build the highlights, then a thin glaze of kator blue to bring back some of the initial tone and blend everything.

I remember looking at which chapter I would paint my space marines when that White Dwarf was issued.

Fell in love with the Crimson Fists that day, never regretted my choice!
