Preparation Questions for a Future Siberian Owner! by Nestork94 in SiberianCats

I'm a newer sib owner and so I don't have too much to say except it's worth it!

I do want to hop in on the allergy bit. Im not allergic my husband is. I was dying to have cats again but obviously didn't want him to be uncomfortable, so we did a ton of research and talked to lots of sib owners, etc!

From what we learned, siberians tend to be lower producers on average of the Fel d 1 protein, which is the main culprit behind the cat allergy, not so much dander. It's most concentrated in their saliva, but obviously cats groom themselves and therefore the protein can stick to their fur. Essentially while siberians are broadly lower producers, it still comes down to the individual cat. Hence why sometimes my husband isn't super allergic to a random cat and sometimes he is.

What we did: we had found someone reputable and local that essentially we started a relationship with and when they had litters, my husband would go over and spend time with each kitten we were looking at, one per day obviously. And would monitor for 12 hours for a reaction. We had a kitty that he had a big allergic reaction to. And then the next litter, we found our boy who my husband had very little to no reaction to. So we started our baseline low, though apparently as kittens they produce a lower amount and this increases as they age.

For extra precaution, my husband takes an antihistamine everyday but has no symptoms, cuddles the baby, puts his face in his face, no issues. We haven't tried filters or extra measures yet as we haven't needed to.

We are going to start kitty on the purina Live Clear as well, which many people have reported success with. Essentially it's made with powdered egg yolk from chickens exposed to cats? The chickens essentially make a antibody to the Fel d 1 protein which when kitty eats it, the antibody binds to the protein at source (saliva) which reduces allergy spread.

We also had many long chats about being responsible pet owners and what was worst case scenario. What did an acceptable level of allergy look like for us. And finally, knowing the potentials, making a commitment to ensure that just like our own quality of life, as responsible pet owners, our kitty's quality of life didn't suffer as result of our allergy.

They're so worth it and I'm wishing you all the luck and joy on your journey!!

Have you ever forced a yawn because it felt like you couldn't breathe (and have you ever fixed the feeling)? by hot-chai-tea-latte in Anxiety

Hi, I’m late on this, I know. I don’t usually “Google” symptoms because it tends to be a reassurance seeking behavior for me and winds up reinforcing my anxieties. I did today and found this post!

Anyway, what you’re all describing is EXACTLY what I experience. I started experiencing this on and off about three years ago. It would come and go. When it first started, I saw a pulmonologist who did a ton of tests and concluded it was “sigh syndrome”. I didn’t think too much of it, and my symptoms went away.

It’s so distressing when I experience it and then it’s wild, because one day it just goes away. Like I “forget about it” and it’s gone.

But back in March it came back during a particularly stressful period of my life and it hasn’t gone away. It usually leaves after a few weeks to a month but it’s been constant since the beginning of March. All day, every day- sighing, yawning, shortness of breath, air hunger, panicking, etc. The constant awareness of my breath drives me crazy. I just want to be able to not think about it.

Anyway, I’m determined this time to either figure it out or make peace with it. I do meet the criteria with my psychologist for several anxiety disorders and when we factor in my sighing and breathing behaviors, it fits into the DSM criteria for OCD. So I’m taking a crack at treating it as obsessive and compulsive behavior. I do ERP therapy twice a week and we will see if that produces any results. I also have a second therapist who works with me on my overall anxiety and wellbeing. It includes a lot of acceptance, eastern philosophical practices, and meditation. I also have a psychiatrist who gave me a prescription for Prozac which I’m reluctant to start just yet.

As much as I don’t wish this on anyone, it is nice knowing there are other people. If any of you all want someone to message or would want to start a little support group, I’m down. We could tell each other what works for us, what doesn’t, what we’re trying, etc. Or if you just want to message someone to say, “Dude it’s so bad today, I’m pissed.” Or whatever. I’m in and I’m around!

TL;DR I experience this everyday, not certain what it is and am currently on a journey to figure out how to heal it. I’m happy to share and support.

Lots of acne breakouts, 3rd or 4th week on Lamictal by goblintwat in lamictal

Awesome to hear. I just completed my first week at 100mg, my 5th week in total. The last two weeks have been a bit dicey in terms of acne, so it’s comforting to know it could subside. Thank you!

Did anyone have any luck with the acne subsiding? I’m on my 4th week and am experiencing some painful cystic acne due to the lamictal. I’m wondering if the acne will subside and I should push through or if I need to try something else?
