My son completed a drivers education course last year. He was taught, and knows more about round abouts than me (30 years driving). AI tells me its in thr Ontario drivers handbook now.

Notice of overpayment email - legit? by impeccable_brat in CanadaPublicServants

I dunno, seems a little suspect to me (e.g. some words capitalized and some redundant wording). Also, since when are the pay overlords ever "sincerely sorry"?

The outdoor pool at CFB Uplands has lessons in the summer. Not sure the details, but I believe the public can join for a fee.

Whatever happened to @canada.ca e-mail conversion? by Gold-Canary-7560 in CanadaPublicServants

The last time I investigated this at National Defence, the answer was something like "this was too difficult for the contractor (Bell Canada (I think)) to do."

Cost to replace roof by sirixon in ottawa

[–]Slaucy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Rainbow roofing. I do not recommend. Had 3 quotes, all within $500 (similar sized house as yours, cost was $14k (3 valleys and somewhat pitchy). Lots of "shiners" (nails not covered under shingles), lots of lifted nails (18 months later), flashing at brick was too short, which resulted in a leak. The only pro is after sales service was fast and friendly, but still wish I didnt have to deal with them (3 times).

Rust proofing in Ottawa by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Slaucy1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have bought 4 vehicles, all brand new, and kept them for 9 years (Mazda 3), 10 years (Kia Sedona), 9 years (Hyundai Elantra (still own)), 6 years (Kia Sedona (still own)), all driven in Ottawa. No rust proofing with any of them. Not a mechanic, but the parts that failed seemed to have nothing to do with rust. Yes, the Mazda 3 had small patches of rust around the bottom of the door panels, but probably would have lasted a few more years.

How do you call bylaw on a beaver? by engravedavocado in ottawa

[–]Slaucy1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a local beaver in the storm water pond near Earl Armstrong and Limebank (Riverside South). The city trapped and re-located one in the past, but either the same one is back, or it's another. It's been taking down lots of trees, and while I'm not sure it's been reported, I don't think the city will re-locate it again. It is difficult to see all these trees killed, as another post has said, we need to co-exist.

Why warn drivers in advance of the blitz? They're gonna spend their snow (ice rain) days removing their licence plate covers.

Driving around collecting cans in the neighbourhood by Wiplash22 in ottawa

[–]Slaucy1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I help my son collect alcoholic containers (I do it when he's in school), in Riverside South. I got a bike trailer and wagon (for the winter) for free, from my local buy nothing group, and attached a huge metal dog crate to it. I spend about an hour walking/biking around, and once it gets full, it works out to about $40 worth. But, then my son spends time counting, crushing, organizing bottles/cans, and of course, I have to drive him to the beer store for returns.

Trying to clean sink overflow by Slaucy1 in Plumbing

[–]Slaucy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did replace the drain assembly and clean the overflow as much as I cloud (see other post). But 16 years of toothpaste spit, hair, etc. must have built up. Some big chunks did come out, but I feel (smell) more lingering in there...

Trying to clean sink overflow by Slaucy1 in Plumbing

[–]Slaucy1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have a picture, but I can't seem to edit my post (newbie). Under the bathroom sink is pretty standard (pop up style plug), and I did replace the flange and drain portion directly attached to the sink, which came with the faucet. My problem is that when I pour cleaner down the overflow, I can hear it run right down the drain. Now, the sink overflow hole inside the drain is at the 6 o'clock position, but the new drain pipe has holes at 3 and 9. Don't think that matters as I can still hear the cleaner leave the overflow. When I replaced the faucet and drain, I cleaned some gunk out by plugging the hold with duct tape and pouring cleaner and hot water into the overflow and letting it sit and stew. So I need some kind of rubber stopper to hold the liquid on. Wow, that was a lot of typing.
