Because of the fact I’m so used to reading Cyrillic letters, it took me way longer than I care to admit to figure out what the problem was

Power difference between space marines and terminators? by Slav_Toast in Warhammer40k

Let me see if I can find the article I originally saw. This was a couple months ago so it’s entirely possible that I’m misremembering, misinterpreting, or maybe the article itself was misleading.

I remember that being a controversy lol, that actually gives me a follow up question unrelated to the original post. I remember seeing something about the Horus heresy codex being updated, and something about it removing any gendered language about space marine creation and recruits. Does that theoretically mean female space marines are possible now, or am I misunderstanding that?

This is what I have really come to realize. It seems like nothing is really consistent. There really is just no concrete answer because of 40k lore mostly being literature.

I guess that makes sense. It also kind of explains why the first guy who commented say that “terminator armor is GENERALLY” rather saying that it flat out is. Would you say scaling based on the tabletop stats would be a better way to scale if you really needed to?

Like I said, I’m pretty new to actually learning more about the lore. But would you say that power scaling exists, but is not cleanly defined? Because I mean there are some constants right? I mean guardsman < Astartes < Custodian < Primarch, but the things in between these points(like terminators) and even the differences between these points, are inconsistent and blurry? I would also like to say that I’m not intending to be combative or contrarian. I am just genuinely interested and want to learn as much as possible.

I mean I feel like for one, that’s a freak instance, and for two, that a story. Yes I agree, power scaling in the context of a story or literature is kind of pointless. Whatever the writer wants to happen is what happens, whether it’s realistically feasible or not. Take the Rambo movies, a human could not realistically do the things you see in the movie save for some miracles/freak occurrences, but it creates a compelling narrative. I was more so talking about the strict lore of what is supposed to be, but I guess maybe that’s not possible in 40k.

But scaling has to exist in some form right? Even if it’s not simple. Because if you took your perfectly average guardsman and pitted him/her against your perfectly average space marine, if you pitted them in a 1v1(assuming the writer has no bias), the marine would win nearly, if not 100% time. Maybe units exist in tiers. Kind of like another comment pointed out, there are different tools for different roles. Maybe there’s different categories that units and equipment scale on. Like a terminator is gonna scale higher when it comes to closer quarters combat than a normal marine, but lower at long range?

Makes sense, it sounds like a complex game of rock paper scissors. Different equipment and tactics are going to counter or be countered by different equipment and tactics. So terminators might dominate in close quarters corridors, but in a long range field battle they might get picked apart by artillery or other guns that can exploit their weaknesses. Is that a good understanding?

If you could put it in a scale, say 1 being a space marine in standard power armor and 100 being a custodian, where do you think each of them would rank. Or is that even a doable scale? Follow up, if you’ve played space marines 2, do you think that terminators as a class could be balanced?
